Why can't I get any sound out of my Pro Tools MBox? |
|
|
Hi,
I have a Windows XP service pack 2 PC of a good spec, with a Terratec
DMX 6Fire 24/96 semi professional soundcard, that is running Pro Tools
LE 6.9. I am trying to setup a Midi studio setup with a Technics KN2600
keyboard as the Midi input (this is connected to the PC via a USB
connection and the drivers are fully installed). I have plugged my
headphones into the appropriate slot on the front of my MBox, but no
sound is coming out. I know that Pro Tools is reading some data as when
I am 'recording' or even tapping a key, I can see the green signal on
the mix window going up and down, but I can hear nothing at all on the
headphones. Similarly, when I play back there is silence, though on the
edit window I can clearly see the blocks of data that have been
recorded. I have adjusted the settings on the front of the MBox to many
combinations, but no result. I have turned the headphones right up and
there is nothing but hiss (they do work as they have tested them on
other things). I am at a loss to explain why this is happening, but if
anyone can offer some advice I would be very grateful, as the MBox is
utterly useless to me in its current condition.
Best regards,
QH

You seem to be recording MIDI data (not audio data) in PT. So far, so
good. Where are you sending this MIDI data? What SHOULD be making
the sound?

Do you get decent sound on: |
a) Startup (the silly Windows intro)?
b) playback of .wav files?
c) playback of any .midi files?
d) playback of an audio CD?

Hmm, to what sound module do you have the Mbox connected?

What "Mbox" ? Terratec DMX 6Fire 24/96 has a front panel that has a
headphone connection (and line in,line out, digital ins/outs,mic ani midi
in/out) .From there you are supposed to hear something if you you have
connected your keyboards audio out to soundcards line in.If that is your
preferrable soundsource
Or you could use a softsynth .

I am afraid I don't really understand the question - forgive me, but I
am a novice to Pro Tools. The MBox is connected to my computer via the
USB connection (as is my keyboard). |

I should also add that the computer plays sound files of all formats
fine outside of Pro Tools. As for Laurence's question, I have not
configured any 'sends' - at least not deliberately. As for what should
be making the sounds - I assume this is asking whether I want to use
the keyboard's internal sounds, or the ones that belong to Pro Tools?
The answer is that I want Pro Tools to do the lot, with the keyboard
purely as a controller.
If anyone can offer any advice, it would be a huge help. |

ProTools has no MIDI sounds. A MIDI track needs to be routed to a
device that has. This could be your keyboard, it could be the
Microsoft Synth (assuming you are on a Windows PC). It could be a
software synth. But it needs to be SOMETHING.

My advice is to pay a return visit to your dealer. Explain what you
want to accomplish and ask what tools you need to do it. The Mbox is a
really cool system, but it sounds like maybe you're not really clear on
what it is or what it does, and, well, to be honest, I just don't feel
like sitting here and walking you through it. I'm lazy and it's kinda
boring. <g> Your dealer should though, since that person gets paid for
helping you understand what you need.
I'll give you a little "getting started" nudge or two though. First,
the Mbox is a sound card. It is the only sound card Pro Tools will
recognize. The hardware and software are a package that work together.
You can't use your Terrathingy with Pro Tools.
Second, the Mbox has no MIDI interface. How is your controller keyboard
connected? Is the MIDI data getting into Pro Tools? Make sure that
part is buttoned up before you go any further.
Third, Pro Tools has no built-in sounds. Think of it like a tape deck
that will record both sound and MIDI data. For the MIDI data to become
sound, it has to pass through some kind of sound module; either an
external hardware synth, or an add-on software synth. Pro Tools LE
includes free "lite" versions of a couple software synths, Ableton Live
and IK Multimedia SampleTank. Look through the manuals for how to make
Pro Tools talk to the software synths.
Hope some of that helps get you going in the right direction.

Have you tried this (this will use SampleTank - you can also use Reason
or Live with a few extra steps):
1.) Create a stereo audio (or Aux) track - do NOT recored enable it.
2.) In the mixer screen add an insert and choose SampleTank - pick a
software instrument and load it to channel 1 ( double click it).
3.) Create a MIDI track, record enable it and for the output choose
channel 1 from SampleTank that is listed here.
Play the keyboard - you will hear the sound you have selected. Click on
Record in the transport and the midi will "record". You can play it
back and change instruments etc...
This will have your keyboard act as a pure MIDI controller - I don't
know if that's what you're after, but at least this will get a sound out
of the beast... At the moment, you are just recording the MIDI signals,
hence the meters registering, but not assigning it to any sounds.
Cheers
