Which combination should I get? |
|
|
Hi all
Should I get:
A. the Allen & Heath PA-12CP (powered 500W/side mixer) to drive my EV300sx
speakers; or
B. the Allen & Heath PA-12 (unpowered mixer) plus a QSC PLX1602 to drive my
EV300sx speakers?
as the price difference is minimal, dont know what combination I should get.
I will be rack mounting it all anyway and they end up weighing about the
same.
one thing I am not sure about is the sound quality of the amp in the A&H
mixer, but I know the PLXs are good.
what should I do?
oh, the system will be used for a small acoustic trio.
thanks in advance.

I would personally go for the seperate option.

Normally a powered mixer would be easier to use and setup and therefore be a
good option for you. (saves all the extra wiring every gig)
However if you are rackmounting everything then the interconects can be set
in place permenantly anyway if you are going into the same rack. So you just
simply need to put in your inputs and your speaker outputs. So i would go
for the seperate option as this is of better quality. Dont for get to leave
rack space to expand later for compressors etc.
If you intend to put it all in 1 rack (this is how it reads to me) remember
that it might be necessary to leave a gap between the amp and any other unit
to minimize heat build up (although the plx amps do run cool).

Hi Rob
the other thought was if I separate the components then if one thing dies
I
can get that fixed/replaced.
yep, I was going to put it all in one rack case, and I was going to put in
compressors etc.
would the PLX1602 have enough headroom for the sx300?
If one thing dies its easier to replace, i would have noted that but as your |
setup only has one desk (like many) and only one amp it makes it a little
more difficult.
Rule of thumb is 2x rms power which would be 600 watts.
you could hapily use the PLX1602 and drive a stereo load with 300watts a
side.
Another way around this is to bridge the amp and run a mono signal (this may
not be suitable for you). This would give a 4ohm bridged load to the
amplifier and would give you the full 1600 watts available to the pair of
cabs. ( i assume you have 1 pair of speakers)
800 watts per cab is a better figure for the sx300 in terms of headroom. (it
doesn't mean you can drive them at this all night long)
If you do have 1 pair of cabs and you feel that running bridged mode (only a
mono signal out front) is suitable. Then to give you the rated power of
600watts a side (2 x the rms rating) you could use the PLX1202 amplifier,
saving some money.
If you have 2 pairs of cabs then its a little different.

Go for the Allen & Heath PA-12 (unpowered mixer) plus a QSC PLX1602.....
Simple.
Yes, you have an extra box to carry around, but at the end of the day you
will have a higher quality amp, greater system expandability and
versilitility and if the (unpowered) mixer should ever go down, you can rent
another to get you by, rather than having to rent a mixer AND power amp, if
you went for the powered mixer option. I don't like them anyway!
