I returned my Lite-On 5045 |
|
|
It simply had too many things wrong with it. When I found out that you
couldn't watch a DVD while it was recording to the hard drive, that was the
last straw. The feature set was superb, as was the price ($300), but this
machine is simply not ready for prime time.
Any other suggestions?

My Toshiba will record to the HD and play a CD. I can record to the HD and
watch a program that was previously recorded to the HD. Biggest drawback of
these DVR's is you cannot record in Dolby stereo.
Hope this helps.

I've expressed my enthusiam for the LVW-5045 in here before, but I'm
afraid that mine is going to have to go back under guarantee after 8
months :-(
I never expected to be able to watch one programme whilst recording
another ... that's the sort of thing you might expect from a video
server, which will cost big bucks.
Anyroadup. the LVW-5045 looked great when it was new, recording at any
resolution you like on the HDD or any variety of DVD. After
experimenting a bit, I standardised on Ricoh DVD+RW disks. These
turned out to be compatible with all of the DVD drives I have,
including the Sony Vaio laptop, which is particularly intolerant.
For the first couple of months, I used the supplied Lite-On DVD+RW
disk and a Philips DVD+RW disk (which I'd bought by mistake when I
first got a Pioneer A104, but that's another story) to copy stuff onto
a PC for editing.
Allegedly, DVD+RW disks ought to be good for 2000 read-write cycles
....
Well, first the Philips disk started to get a bit tired, and the
Lite-On disk stopped playing nicely soon after that.
I'd already started using the Ricoh DVD+RW disks by this time, and
they were then producing more consistent results.
I've had a couple of problems with the HDD suffering from amnesia;
once I was able to revive it by using the Defragment utility.
Last week it started making DVDs which it could replay but nothing
else would. A few days later the HDD forgot about everything I've
recorded and not trtansferred yet over the last two weeks.
Now it won't even boot up :-(
Fortunately, I've been able to take out the HDD and put it in another
computer to retrieve all the stuff I'd recorded. The file structure is
proprietary, but the "content" files can simply be renamed as .mpg and
they'll work, which is a Good Thing. The file chunk size is 2GB rtaher
than 1GB, but that's not a problem for me :-)
Other suggestions? I have a PC with a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR350 card in
it, which has just become my primary capture engine.
It's good.

It should be perfectly simple to watch a DVD while recording a TV show on
the hard drive. The 2 functions are independent. Or at least they should
be.

In a budget machine it wouldn't have enough processing power to decode
DVD and encode at the same time.

It certainly can encode and decode the contents of the HD simultaneously;
that's how "Time Slip" works. If it can read the HD while it's writing to
the HD, it should be able to read a DVD at the same time it's writing to the
HD. Doesn't this seem logical?

If you are recording digital TV then the unit wouldn't decode the
digital info, it would just write it straight to hard disk without any
processing. So in that specific case it's only doing one of
decoding/encoding. I can't tell from the ads if the 5045 handles the
old type analogue TV but I suspect it does. If the unit records and
plays back TV in timeslip mode, I think it might be recording to hard
disk in some easy to decode format that doesn't load the processor as
much.
This is the reason I don't buy combo units. They miss out a few
features that exist in single purpose units. It can be months until
one finds the comnbo unit is missing a feature. The only alternative
with high tech units is to rent-buy. This gives the chance to upgrade
the unit within a year.
