This may be completely normal for your drive.
I have a Pioneer DVR-A09 and it will burn many different brands of 8x
disks at 12x. The firmware in the drive has a special write strategy
for certain media codes, and automatically ups it to 12x.

anything to do with video, just DVD recording.
I just installed a new Toshiba SDR5372 DVD recorder. You can see the
specs here
I can't get it to burn a disk. I bought a package of FUJI DVD+R 8x
disks.
Using Roxio's latest Easy Media Creator I keep trying to do a data
disk by adding a folder of about 700 megs of photos. When I start the
burn it shows a screen that correctly identifies the drive and the
media/media type. But, it always defaults to a 12x drive speed with I
change to 8x. The Record Option is "Write Only" whatever that means.
Then I click burn and at first it acts like it's going to write to the
disk. Then is stops and ejects the disk, and throws up a message that
reads something like this:
"Please insert a blank disk into the recorder. You may use any of the
following types of media: CD this and that, yatta, yatta, DVD-R,
DVD-RW, yatta, yatta. . ."
In a dropdown box it shows "48x MAX (8.3mb/sec)
I try brand new disk-after-disk and it does the same thing.

(Try Nero, NTI CD/DVD Maker or RecordNow.)
Try with DVD-R. Suspect that Fuxio may have trouble with DVD+R media,
and this Mike Richter's cockamamie mumbo jumbo was to weasel out of the
problem:

Mike Richter (Slimy Friggin SOB) barfed (2/17/05):

Which one should I buy when my drive can read and write both?
Compatibility, durability, speed in writing, which one is better
for my drive?
in my experience (which is limited),
+R is more likely to work in Europe.

Impressed with the tidbit about the "European" stuff.
But whatever happened to "quirky", "anomalous" or "trickier"?

+ is slightly more quirky

Is it now "quirky"?
Whatever happened to "anomalous" or "trickier", Slimeball?

Mike Richter (Slimy Friggin SOB) screeched (12/30/04):

DVD-ROM on + media can be anomalous

Mike Richter (Slimy Friggin SOB) splattered (10/21/04):

DVD-ROM is a bit trickier on the + media.

Sounds like you have extensive experience in DVD burning.
What do you mean by "trickier"?
Did burning to the + media require you to use a needle,
a magnifying glass and a cigarette lighter?

To whom it may concern.
I concluded the Toshiba unit was defective on arrival. I returned it
and bought an NEC ND-3540A, which seems to be working great except for
one issue. I'll post another article about this issue.

In part they read:

DVD+RW Speed: 4 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-R Speed: 12 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-RAM Speed: 2 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-ROM Read Speed: 16 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-RW Speed: 4 X (DVD, DVD-R)
I can't get it to burn a disk. I bought a package of FUJI DVD+R 8x

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks
