I hope this the correct group for my question. It doesn't have
anything to do with video, just DVD recording.

I just installed a new Toshiba SDR5372 DVD recorder. You can see the
specs here
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=4826172#description

In part they read:

DVD+R DL Speed: 5 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD+R Speed: 16 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD+RW Speed: 4 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-R Speed: 12 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-RAM Speed: 2 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-ROM Read Speed: 16 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-RW Speed: 4 X (DVD, DVD-R)

I can't get it to burn a disk. I bought a package of FUJI DVD+R 8x
disks.

Using Roxio's latest Easy Media Creator I keep trying to do a data
disk by adding a folder of about 700 megs of photos. When I start the
burn it shows a screen that correctly identifies the drive and the
media/media type. But, it always defaults to a 12x drive speed with I
change to 8x. The Record Option is "Write Only" whatever that means.

Then I click burn and at first it acts like it's going to write to the
disk. Then is stops and ejects the disk, and throws up a message that
reads something like this:

"Please insert a blank disk into the recorder. You may use any of the
following types of media: CD this and that, yatta, yatta, DVD-R,
DVD-RW, yatta, yatta. . ."

In a dropdown box it shows "48x MAX (8.3mb/sec)

I try brand new disk-after-disk and it does the same thing.

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

jim

Sounds a bit flakey mate.

Contact the tech suppport.

Or send it back and buy a Pioneer 109.

It's set the same as the drive I replaced. Also, I have now gotten it
to write to a CD using the XP writer I think.

Well, if you have problem and you want help, then I would say it's better
to give more detail for the real answer rather than playing guessing game to
each other.

1. All drives have the same Master/Slave relationship. Or the real married
couple must be a Man/Woman to make a child (Master/Slave)

2. Not all the manufactures/Models require to have exact same PIN (location)
so "same as the drive you replace" doesn't mean it's correct.

3. And then Master/Slave setting require will depend on how you connect the
drive.

My wild guess, and I assume you try to put the newer drive exactly same
setting, same connection with the older one. Then MAKE SURE to have the
cable connects correctly.

- The RED wire (side) goes to lowest PIN #'s

Both the old drive and the new drive are jumpered as Master.

The data cable is installed correctly.

Also, it seems unlikely the software could correctly identify the
drive and media if the cabling wasn't right.

*If* the hardware is correct and software doesn't work, then check to see
if the software needs to update to support newer drive.

If his burning software recognizes the drive, it's not a jumper problem.

No - One should be Master (Generally the first one on the cable as you move
from the motherboard I believe) and one should be Slave, OR, both should be
Cable Select (CS). Unless of course they are on a different ribbon, but
that is unlikely I would think.

DVD writers are finicky things, so if you can get another blank DVD of a
different type from a friend to try then do. Anything with a RITEK dye is
usually good.

If it won't do a CD though, then that is suspect as there are rarely any
compatibility problems there.
