avi + subtitles into one avi file |
|
|
Please help me with the following issue.
I have an AVI file and also the subtitles for it (i.e. .sub file) and I
want to create one AVI file with the subtitle included, so that I can
burn a CD for my gf to play it on her computer's CD-ROM, and her
brother to play it on his TV connected DVD player.
So far I have tried:
-Winavi..no success.
-Virtual Dub..I read that this tool can do the job, but I didn't get
how.
-Post on this group..I hope that will work.

First thing I'd check if that DVD player can play external subtitles, many
that can play AVIs can do that, too. Just place the text file in the same
directory as avi is and use the same name as well, eg, movie1.avi &
movie1.sub (or srt or whatever). If does not work, get vobsub plugin, it
comes with vobsub/textsub filter for virtual dub. BTW if your gf installs
it, she can watch the avi file with external subtitles, no need to encode
them into avi file.
Start VirtualDub, load your AVI, go to video menu, select full processing.
go to filters, add textsub filter - there you specify how to wrap the
subtitles, font size, which file, etc. etc. If the filter is not on the list
you may need to browse to the directory where you installed the vobsub
plugin and add it manually. Preview the output, if subtitles are displayed
OK, size, position, etc. Select the codec you like for video encoding
(video - compression). Encode. I use 2 pass xvid, so I would have to do this
twice. You'll get an avi with permanent subtitles encoded in it. |

I use ffdshow codec to play a srt subtitle file with an avi file on my pc.
I have a Phillips DIVX DVD player that displays a srt subtitle file without
any special encoding. Hope this helps.

Thanks for ur answer!
That DVD player can't play external subtitles, actually this is the big
issue:(...
So I installed virtual dub, vobsub plugin, selected full processing,
add textsub filter. I'm not sure on which coded to use for
video-compression as I'm not familiar with DVD players, I just selected
DIVX 5.0.5 - what r the better alternatives so I can be sure the movie
is played by that DVD player (I don't know its exact model, but it can
play CDs)...
So I got the avi file with subtitles included, but not synchronized,
there's like a 5seconds delay, but on the original avi played with
bsplayer, they are ok!
So what can I do to eliminate the delay and what codec should work
best?
Thanks again! |

Let me ask a few questions first, what are you doing???? |
1) Can your DVD player play DivX (read the manual).
The fact tha tit can play CD means nothing, CD can be CVD VCD SVCD,
these are all forms of mpeg, not DivX.
2) You are using Microsoft windows only, not Linux?
Now let us assume that your DVD player CANNOT play DivX, then you need to make
a real DVD, wit han authoring program, or a SVCD or CVD with mpeg2 with embedded
subs.
If you DVD player CAN play DivX, I have done it by editing the subs
in
substation alpha
Then use vdub with vdub subtitle filter and the .ssa subtitle file.
(The original subtitle filter by Avery Lee)
There are programs around to convert yo usub format to .ssa format,
and you can shift timing and edit in substation alpha.
If you want to make CVD or SVCD with EMBEDED subs I can only do this in Linux.
http://panteltje.com/panteltje/subtitles/
I am sure there is also Microsoft windows software for CVD and SVCD.
If your DVD player cannot play DivX you should go to rec.video.desktop
and you should also read www.vcdhelp.com anyways.
You can lookup your player there too if you have no manual.
So, what can your DVD player play, that is the fist thing you need to find out.

Re: avi + subtitles into one avi file |

I was a bit vague about 'it can play cds': I meant that if I put a avi
file on a cd, than it can play that avi file, but is not capable of
using any external subtitles which might be on the cd.
I'm sure it can play DIVX, so I will check the substation alpha
program, then try to estimate the delay and do the time shifting.
Any other stuff I should be aware about? (using win)
Thx! |

As Jan already asked, are you sure that that player can play AVIs? It's not
a standard feature and not all can do that. As for the codec, best bet would
be Divx & MP3 sound. The delay, do you have VBR sound in that file? Usually
it's less problematic if you use CBR. Anyway, you can try to fix the problem
by setting audio delay in VirtualDub, Audio->Interleaving. You must guess
the proper delay, do a few encodings of some short critical part where you
can easily detect if audio and video are in sync.
If the player can't play AVIs you should create VCD/SVCD/DVD. I'd go for
permanent subtitles in this case, too. It's much easier - non permanent SVCD
subtitles are rarely supported by players and to create non-permanent DVD
subtitles you need more complex and more expensive software. As for how to
get subtitles on Windows, just use VirtualDub as a frameserver for the MPEG
encoder (eg TMPGEnc) instead of encoding an AVI with it. This is quite a
complex task, you may try programs like AVI2DVD (instead of VirtualDub) that
would do most of the work for you.
Good luck!

Yes, watch the fontsize, make sure you get enough on one line. |
And in a good place, if the movie has black bars buttom and top, you
can put subs there, but a normal TV wil always cut something of, both
at the sides and at the bottom (and top).
You will probably like to make a few tests on a CD-RW and a real TV.
CD-RW saves money and coasters...

I'm sure it can play AVIs, however I get a subtitle delay, not a sound
delay! I tried to modify the Audio->Interleaving->audio delay
parameter, and the results are not ok.
Video and audio are in sync, but not the subtitles, so I'll check for a
subtitle tool. |

Oops, I misread, sorry. For subtitle syncing, you can use Subtitle
Workshop. |

Re: avi + subtitles into one avi file |

I have some good progress with the following configuration: convert
subtitle to SSA format with Subtitle Workshop, load movie, use the
Avery Lee subtitle plugin for vdub.
I got a smaller avi file in size from 664m to 460m using the divx 4
codec. The quality is a bit lower but acceptable.
There are avi files for which I get a warning message about CBR/VBR
stuff (I'll post it later). I think I'll get a audio delay..I'm
processing such file now and I'll keep posting. |
