Hi,

Last week I put ordered a camcorder at www.bestpricecamers.com. Their
price seemed the lowest. The first suprise was that their shipping cost
starts 1t $50 and then for next day delivery they charge $150. My
husband wanted the camcorder for the weekend and their price was still
the best. I put the order and the next day, I get a call if I want an
extra battery and I they tried to use pressure tactics to sell me extra
accessories at inflated prices. I declined and asked to keep my
original order.

After 3 days, I called back and they claimed that they are out of
stock. I cancelled the order. They were very unappologetic about the
whole thing. They really suck. Be careful if you plan to shop at their
store.

When will people ever learn not to buy from crooks.
Buy it at a local store, no shipping, you get it in your hands before you
pay, and take it back if it breaks.
You get what you pay for. The Net is full of crooks.

You must live in area with a low sales tax. ;)

B&H and Adorama are bullet-proof choices, both reputable and with liberal
return policies, and for those of us in expensive cities, shipping is far
less than sales tax on expensive items.

[SNIP sad, but often repeated story]

Arianna,

As you have unfortunately learned, the "best price," is not necessarily the "
best price."

As others have said, checking into the reputation of an organization,
especially an on-line organization, is the second step, before attempting to
purchase. Most are in business to get your money, maybe your credit card info,
and few, it seems, care about actually delivering merchandise, or service.

To the list that others have posted, I'd also add Calumet Photo (Chicago/US
area), as a good resource. An assistant just got a bum D70s, and Calumet
replaced it, before he had sent the offending unit back. Few questions asked.
I usually don't really "shop" for lowest price, but will compare amongst
tried, and true, performers. I may pay a few extra $'s, but the hassle factor
is way, way down.

Sorry about your experience. Hope you got a camcorder in time for the event.

I still buy a lot of what I use at the local store. I can try it, compare
it, and if there's a problem, exchange it with no wait. It's worth the
slight premium (7.75% vs shipping) for the security.

Ironically B&H was once considered to be a part of the gang of rip-off shops
located in New York city.

They completely rehabilitated their name and their business practices years
ago and now are amongst the finest of mail order sources.

One of their managers used to post quite a bit to one of the photography
newsgroups, I think he finally stopped after being slandered and insulted
too many times by a couple of lying morons.

A very nice guy and extremely helpful.

IIRC, Calumet was an old well established when I visited their shop in
1966.
I think B&H and Adorama were around back then as well. Old companies
are often safer than newer companies. It is still a good Idea to do a
little
research.

If you are referring to Henry Posner, I think he was in charge of sales
or something like that (he explained his position at one point a year
or so ago). Haven't been over to rec.photo.digital for a while (too
many other things going), but he was fairly regular there. He refused
to get involved in any of the idiots that wanted to argue with him as
a general rule, was always polite and generally a good source of
information.

Sorry to hear about your problems. Consider it a learning experience.
What appears to be a great price may not be so great, especially on the
internet. There are many photo dealers and many of those work under more
than one name on the internet. It is best to check them out before making
any purchase.

I use B&H one of the good ones. It may not always have the lowest
price, but it does give good honest service without surprises that generally
mean more total cost or lower value at many of the other places.

A typical story from a Brooklyn camera dealer.

The net is full of crooks is it? I bought my Fujifilm S7000 for £309 from a
company
in England - I've seen it on sale in shops here (Scotland) for more than
£450.
Same with my camcorder - cheaper online. No shop to upkeep, little overheads
on a
warehouse - I'd never buy from a shop again.
