You get what you pay for. The Net is full of crooks.

The net is full of crooks is it? I bought my Fujifilm S7000 for
£309 from a
company
in England - I've seen it on sale in shops here (Scotland) for more
than
£450.
Same with my camcorder - cheaper online. No shop to upkeep, little
overheads
on a
warehouse - I'd never buy from a shop again.

...and probably 'Grey imports', with no warranty if things go wrong,
unless your online retailer wants....

If you insist on buying without learning about the process, then yes,

this could well happen.
Of course, buying locally is no guarantee of a good experience,
either, especially if you buy out of some guy's trunk, just because
the price is lower.

If you do your homework on vendors, you can save a lot online and get
exactly the same products as in the local stores.

and you can also get ripped-off with similiar appearing equipment that lacks
such niceties as warranties...

All depends on how much you value your time I suppose.

I've yet to find ANY online equipment vendor, either video or still
photography, that is appreciably cheaper that isn't trying to rob people.
Cheaper yes, appreciably cheaper no. And I've been buying photographic
equipment on a professional level for over 20 years.

Having said that, there are plenty of decent online dealers, but none of the
dramatically discounted ones are on the up and up. None of them. The nature
of the industry they're trying to deal in doesn't have the profit margins in
it to give the kinds of deals that the crooks try to promote.

Sure, if you're a moron and incapable of distinguishing the reliable
and honest from the scammers.

Using Pricegrabber and resellerratings takes less time than driving to
the local store.

There are more than a few honest discounters online. Even B&H is
cheaper than the local stores.

I bought a D70 Kit and a 28-200mm lens for $1400 from One Call. Local
price for exactly the same items with same packaging, accessories, and
warrantees was $1770. I don't know if you consider that "appreciably
cheaper" but it's significant in my book.

Ironically B&H was once considered to be a part of the gang of rip-off shops
located in New York city.

They completely rehabilitated their name and their business practices years
ago and now are amongst the finest of mail order sources.

If you intend to stay in business for very long, it tends to be more
profitable to be honest and reputable. :) Fortuantely I never
experienced the bad side of B&H. They're always been great to work with.

Thanks for recalling,. B&H has been around for 30+ years. I was a
customer for almost 10 years before I started working here and that was
11 years ago. I cut back on newsgroup visits because it seemed most of
the conversations had migrated to web-hosted forums.

Neverthess, reading, "A very nice guy and extremely helpful. " was a
treat. Thanks

Evil or Very Mad Beware of this seller. My wife purchased Sony DVD Camcorder from bestpricecameras also. Their pricing schema is dishonest saying at best. Price they list is stripped version, no additional parts, meaning no batteries, no chargers, … When consumer purchases the camera, he or she is expecting all the necessary accessory items listed within owners manual, such as battery and chargers. By the time you purchased the needed equipments to operate, prices jumped from $416.00 to $625.00 (OEM level) additionally they also increased shipping fees to $85.0from $35.000. By the time I found the true cost, I was not able to cancel the order. New York Attorney General are you reading this website?

I agree with the comments about B&H. I just bought Final Cut Studio and
a bunch of related stuff from them. My experiences on the phone with
them, I live in Anchorage, Ak, have always been good. However, I went
to NYC this past month and thought I'd get FCP Studio while I was there.

I thought I might save a few bucks buying it at the store and saving
shipping. The NY tax was $110+ something where the shipping would be
$74.00 or something like that. Anchorage doesn't have sales tax.

I came back home and ordered over the phone.

The folks at the store were a lot less friendly than on the phone also.
Maybe it is the NY thing. I felt like I was imposing on them.

At any rate I can't fault them for anything really. They seem to be a
good resource.

Full Compass is a great choice also. They have some things B&H don't.

Something doesn't add up here. Sales tax in New York City is 8 1/2%, to go
from $ 74.00 to $ 110.00 is not a difference attributed to sales tax.

I've seen both sides of the spectrum in NYC. I chalk it up to some people
just not being too nice while others are.

Given that the store is often loaded with customers and
that many of the salespeople seem to go nonstop for hours
with only small breaks, it probably is true that the
legendary "New York Attitude" breaks through from time
to time.

Living in New York I try to get to B&H early, before the
crowds show up (but there are still folks there). I've
almost always found the sales people willing to take as
much time as I need -- and they don't push me in a direction
I don't want to go in.

While I'm by no means a big customer, I've done all my
purchasing there for years -- from film to cameras and
lenses.
