I have been researching but it seems like the info I see assumes you have a
TV that can do progressive scan.
I have a JVC 27 inch (around 4 years old so 2000-2001) that has S-video
input but I don't think it can do progressive scan.
What would be the best DVD player for someone with my TV? Or should I really
get the a TV that can do progressive scan???
I was playing DVDs from my computer to this TV (with a 50 foot RCA cable
groan!) but the quality seemed not so great -- there was too many artifacts
and what seemed like you could see the scan lines too much?
Thanks for any advice!

Progressive scan is not required for DVD (progressive also requires a
component input, anyways). That said, it's an option in most every
player these days. Since you have S-Video, you will get very good
quality from most any player in interlaced mode.

Most players these days are made-in-China, with somebody's name
slapped on it. Even many of the big names are probably identical
internally.

Philips DVP642 - DVD/CD/VCD/SVCD/DIVX/XVID/MPEG4/CD/MP3 CD/JPEG CD
player for <$70 at walmart.com

Does the progressive and pal to interlaced playback well, so you can
play NTSC & PAL discs on your TV w/o much trouble. Plays lots of
formats, too.

I have a Magnavox/Philips TV about the same age as yours, which has *only*
S-video and separate AV inputs, and recently purchased a Panasonic VCR-DVD
combo, which has component, S-video and regular connections.

In spite of all the raves about differences in component and S-video
quality, I used the regular AV input with mine, and I think I get a fine
picture, and do see an improvement over what I had before.

Just buy a player that has ALL the connections, use the connections you have
now, and upgrade your cables when this TV dies. Or use an S-video cable now
which many people consider much superior to what I am doing. :)

I can't see disposing of a good TV... until it dies. ;)
