Tape wrinkle question |
|
|
I have a few TDK (S-HG) Super High Grade T120 tapes. At the start of the tape
about 3 inches from the clear lead in, the tape starts to wrinkle along the very
bottom edge for about 3 inches. Then the wrinkle slowly moves up until it
becomes a crease about 1/16 inch from the edge but disappears after about two
feet of tape. It only happens on this particular brand. I have repaired them by
cutting away the bad section but it just returns. Nothing appears any different
from other tapes but it has not occurred on any other brand. Just curious if
anyone is familiar with this phenomenon and its cause?

Yes. your vcr probably needs a new pinch roller. In 99% of cases I've
seen this has been the case. happens at the start of the tape when the
take up torque is higher. you'll need to note the make and model number
of the unit and ideally take out the original pinch roller , and bring
it to a spares shop. Should be relatively easy. www.repairfaq.org has
info on vcr probs.

Thanks for the info, I'll pick one up and replace it. It does seem weird that |
only one brand of tape has the problem. |

could be that the new tape you're trying to use is thinner than
others.....usually you find that in vcrs with this problem, E-240 tapes
are affected by it more than E-60, E-120 or E-180 as the tape is much
thinner and easier to crumple. Ironically, in borderline cases where
the roller is on the brink of going completely hard, cheapo tapes seem
to survive better!

I've had it happen, not where its happening to you,
but just randomly, and I don't attribute it to tape stock.
This is clearly happening in a rewinder or tape guides
inside the VCR. A VCR will not play over tape wrinkled
like that. I use three T-120s to tape the 3 networks each
night. One of them has a tape crinkle at the 3 hour mark
in the six hour tape. It won't tape beyond that point. When
I tape some long PBS with that tape, it will stop in the middle
of it. I consider the tapes not for anything permanent. Sometimes,
I fast forward past the spot so I can keep recording with that
tape.
