DVD reading or ripping : no audio |
|
|
Hi
When I try to read a DVD (original not a copy), video is OK, sound is OK
with PowerCinema but not with PowerDVD, both tools provided with my computer
(Pentium4/3Go, XP Home).
The real problem is when I copy the dvd to the hard disk with dvdshrink, I
have the same behavior, I mean video but no sound. There is still no sound
if I read the files with another computer. So there are probably some audio
problems on the computer. I also try Dvddecrypter, but it is the same.
Any idea of the origin of this sound problem?
many thanks

Ok then, let's start with playback problems with PowerDVD.... Do you have
output set to Digital Output in PowerDVD's options?
Other ideas are based on similar ideas, also could be based on Audio AC3
filter issues. Basically there are too many possible causes here and
involving DVDShrink as well is just a red herring, could be anything there,
I've rarely seen DVDShrink cause what your describing, DVDShrink does
nothing with the audio streams other than copy them.
Try setting PowerDVD back to defaults and seeing the extended details of the
playback, it's in Playback Information.

Thank you for your help.
I agree this is not a dvdshrink problem. I am convinced there is a bad
configuration around audio pilots, but which ones?
I burn the copied files on a rewritable DVD, there is still no audio. And I
have not found any improvement in the PowerDVD audio menu.

Re: DVD reading or ripping : no audio |

Alright - A few suggestions: this is to resolve playback problems with
PowerDVD on Original DVD's:
1) Try re-installing PowerDVD.
2) When playing back a DVD Right Click the playback window, "Show
Information" it gives info such as Audio Stream chosen to playback, also the
type of Video stream etc.
3) You say you copy the files off a DVD? How do you do this? Usually this is
not possible with Encrypted DVD's, Shrink and Decyrepter are some of the
many programs that can do this reliably.
4) Lets try something else too, run the program: mplayer2.exe. Drag one of
the (ripped and unencrypted) 1Gb .Vob files onto the window, what happens?
It should playback video WITH sound, if it does not, then the problem is
based on your PC's Codec setup.... PowerDVD installs AC3 & mpeg2 filter
playback support into Windows, I think PowerCinema does not.
Answers to all of these suggestions will give enough info to resolve the
cause of the problem.

Ok, I try what you propose.
I burnt the extracted files (with dvdshrink) with Nero, like I use to do,
and it works on my other computer.

Do you think this problem comes from the integrated audio driver (into the
motherboard) like there is no PCI audio card?
maybe it is a limitation?

Well this clears the mud a touch as to the cause of the problem, Ripping &
copying work perfectly, PowerCinema works Ok, 'cause it uses it's own AC3
sound filter driver. PowerDVD installs one into windows, and uses that.
That's why neither PowerDVD nor MediaPlayer play with sound, the AC3 driver
installed into windows is not working.
Any ideas anyone how to fix it? Personally I'd stick with using PowerCinema.

You're not trying to play the vob files directly are you?
Certain files don't work unless you choose the Open DVD File on Hard Disk
option.
May or may not be this.

of course I'm trying to play the ripped/non-encrypted vob files directly,
they seem to work in some Media Players, Mplayer2.exe is one which works if
the codecs are installed properly, and it's there in ALL versions of windows
from 98 onwards... |

Yes but are you trying to play the vob files individually in PowerDVD or are
you using the Open DVD File on Hard Disk option?
PowerDVD has problems with certain vobs and they'll only play correctly if
you use the above option.
The exact technical reasons for this are unknown to me but I believe it has
something to do with how the audio streams are processed on the original
DVD.
If you try to play an individual vob that suffers from this characteristic
then you don't get any sound.
The lateset version of PowerDVD seems to cope with all files when played in
Hard Disk mode.
