If one records RF on VHS, there is no difference between
it and video and audio recording. There is a difference with
DVDs, however. I tried taping rf and had enormous roaring
on the soundtrack. Not so with v/a dvd recorder taping.

It all depends on the recorders. I always recorded from cable -
which is a step above RF - and the stereo recordings sounded very
good when I finally transfered the old ones on the the DVD format.

Buy the cheapest, all electronics these days are built
cheap, unless you`re buying really high-end at very high prices.
the only difference between a $250 toshiba and a $100 classic or
whatever is the brand name (toshiba to classic).I bet if you were
to open up the 2,the parts would be almost identical.

The only differences as you state are not quite true.

Some of the cheaper units will not record the audio in stereo.
Some don't have have Firewire/I-Link inputs if you want to transfer
from a camcorder that has one.

I've never heard of a DVD recorder that records in only
mono...can you link to the one you're talking about?

It was a post in this NG a few months ago. One of the el-cheapos.

I want to say ILO, but that may be wrong. I was surprised when I
heard about that too.

It's not iLo, all of them are stereo..they even have firewire inputs.

One model has a mono tuner...

Who uses a tuner in a DVD recorder? I remember the VCR my Dad bought in 1978
had one...but why would you need one now?
