[The Man From Mars]

I have a Onkyo 670 Home theater and have noticed that sometimes on the
surround speakers the dialogue sounds garbled or distorted. this is very
light and can only be heard with your ear to the speaker. The speakers are
hooked up correctly and work great on 5.1, DTS, ect. This is heard usually
on old TV shows or when dialogue is coming from the center speaker and the
receiver in on pro logic II. Just curious as to what this is and is there
any way to prevent it and is it normal?

This is normally with the standard matrix surround. This has to do with the
principal that the surround is separated using some complex phase extraction
between the left and right. There are also some minor distortion when doing
this type of system. Under normal use, and listening conditions, this should
not be easily heard. Normally we don't put your heads directly up to a
speaker when we are listening to our music.

If you are checking this effect from a music source, you must be very sure
that the distortion is not in the music. It would be best to compare a
number of sound sources to see where the effect may be coming from. In the
lab we use the proper test generators, scope, and distortion analyser to
make sure that things are up to specs.

Thanks for the response and you are right it is not easily heard at all. My
system is brand new and works fantastically. I just noticed the garbled
sound on some TV stations in pro logic II but was really wanting to know if
that was a normal thing? No problems with DVD, Cd, ect. I just changed my
audio from my cable box so that it would go directly to the receiver instead
of going from the cable box to the TV THEN the receiver. Also I have
changed the audio set up on my Comcast/Motorola cable box to the settings
that it is supposed to be on but it actually doesn't sound as loud now. I
do appreciate your response . Thanks for any input you can give me...
