I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but I'm new to this whole DVD
authoring thing. I've been trying to burn DVDs of all of the Star Trek:
Enterprise episodes I've got, and I keep getting this annoying problem
where the video starts out fine, then over the course ofthe show, the video
starts to run behind the audio. So much so that by the end of a 45 minute
episode, the video is 2 or 3 seconds behind the audio. The files are
standard VCD compliant MPEG2 files. The strange thing is, that there's no
audio problems when the files are played on the computer before authoring
the DVD. It only appears in the finished product. Also, it seems to vary
from program to program. I've tried several differnt ones, and some DVD
authoring programs have the audio drifting problem and some don't. Roxio
has the problem, so does TMPGEnc Author. I wanted to use TMPGEnc Author
because it had the features I wanted from a program, that so many others
lacked. Mainly being able to use text bottons for the episodes, and not
those dumb looking little screencap buttons that so many programs try to
make you use. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

VCD is MPEG1. Are these SVCD? What resolution are they?

DVDLab is even better for making menus. You can try it out for free.

In what format is the audio and video in these files? I think TMPGEnc
DVD Author will tell you when you load them in. I suspect there is
something unusual about them. The audio will need to be transcoded
because DVD requires 48kHz sampling while (S)VCD uses 44.1kHz, but
I've done that with TMPGEnc DVD Author before, and it worked OK.

It would probably help to re-encode your files with TMPGEnc (the
encoder) if there is something about them that is out of the ordinary.

I'm sorry. I meant MPEG1. They're 352x240 NTSC 1150Kbps bitrate.

Thank you. I'll try it. Right now I'm trying it with the audio set as
PCM instead of mpeg. I get 5 eps per disc instead of 9, but maybe the
problem is when it reencodes the audio.

If you have a rewritable DVD with which to experiment, I would try
using TMPGEnc to demultiplex the audio and video from each file (use
the MPEG Tools on TMPGEnc's file menu). Make sure both audio and
video end up with the same playing time. You could then use TMPGEnc
to process just the audio for 48kHz (make sure you select the high
quality option for the sampling frequency converter on the audio
engine tab under environmental setting on TMPGEnc's option menu), and
then re-multiplex the converted audio with the video (it's best not to
re-encode the video if you can avoid it). That might fix whatever is
currently going wrong with your mpeg files.

Thank you. I appreciate the help. I'll try that also. BTW, my experiment
to put the video as PCM didn't work.

When I was digitizing video, I found that if I left the Preview window open,
the audio would drift. When I closed the window, it would be in sync. I
don't know if that would help your problem (I am using a mac) but processor
power going to show the video may in some way unsync the tracks.

The files are fine when I watch them directly on the computer, and some DVD
programs burn them fine. However, I think the problem is in the authoring,
because some of the DVD programs (including the one I like really well) end
up with drifting in the end product.

I had exactly the same problem a while ago when I first captured an analog
video. I solved it by capturing using ScenAlyzer Live,
(http://www.scenalyzer.com/). This tool has a 'keep audio synchronized'
option which works just great. You can download a trial version from the web
site. The trial version will insert some logo frames, but at least you can
see whether it solves your problem. I also like the other features the
program has, so it's worth giving it a try!
