Is there a program out there that converts VCD to DVD? Have been using DIVX
to DVD and love it's simplicity. Would love to find an equivalent for VCD
and SVCD.

For plain vanilla VCD/SVCD (no subtitles multiple audio tracks, menus etc.)
you can just use VCDGear freeware (www.vcdgear.com) to convert the
..dat file on the video cd to .mpg. Then use TMPGEnc Plus to convert
the .mpg to dvd using the wizard. If you want to insert chapter points
that's easy. In TMPGEnc Plus the last page of the wizard, under the
edit box for Output File there's a check box to output separate audio
and video streams. Check the box. Then use DVDAuthorGui to
author your DVD. It's very easy to do. You can find guides how
to author a simple DVD on www.videohelp.com Search on
DVDAuthorGui and that should get the guide.

TMPGEnc Plus will cost you $37 but a lot of freeware works with
it so it's a bargain. I've been using it nearly every day for 3 or
4 years now. http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tp.html

Try a free program called VSO DivX to DVD - don't be put off by the name, it
accepts a wide range of source input files..

Thanks. I had been using this program to convert DIVX's. Didn't realise that
it actually did MPEG's as well.

It's a pretty easy to use interface - love it.

It's ok as long as the source and dest video have the
same frame rate. If the source is 25 fps or less and
you convert to 29.97 you'll prolly notice the audio out
of sync when you watch the vid on your tv. To fix
it up without audio sync problems you really need
to use something like DGPulldown or another method.
See the discussions on http://forums.afterdawn.com/
about PAL <=> NTSC conversions.

For "watch once throw away" conversions at the same
frame rate it's fine.

I have a VCD from another country which is NTSC. I tried to use the
vcdgear as you have suggested here. But I can not figure how to load
the .dat files into vcdgear. The only task option it has is for .vpj
type files. I am new to this. I would appreciate if you can please give
me some step by step instructions. I am trying to convert the vcd to
dvd.

Look on the left side for a drop down list.
It has stuff like "dat->mpg". Choose the
conversion you want from the list.

follow up - I forgot to say if you want to use DivXtoDVD to convert a VCD
all you have to do is copy the .dat file off the VCD to your hard disk and
rename it to .mpg, then DivXto DVD will recognise it in the file selection.
You probably have discovered this by now!
