Projector V Plasma |
|
|
I love my surround sound system,in fact I am "anal" about it,but I am
still viewing movies with a 68 cm CRT 4x3 TV. Fantastic DTS sound, but
small picture. I would like Plasma or LCD 130 cm. but the cost is
prohibitive. Is Forward projection a "real" alternative ?? ,say up to
$3.500 max, some input from keen DVD watchers would be appreciated.
Thanks Guys.

Absolutely. If you're happy to put up with the drawbacks of
projection (a little fiddly to set up, the need for decent light
control, maybe a new bulb every few years, plus a few other that elude
me at the moment), then you'll be tickled pink. We've been using an
Infocus X1 as our everyday TV for about 12 months and have never
looked back. We should get about 4 years out of our 4000 hour bulb,
and a set of curtains solved the light control issue. Mine cost me
around $1400 give or take (I bought it while I was on holiday in
Canada) and to our eyes for the money it's unbeatable.
I guess the litmus test is that you seldom (never?) read posts from
people who have bought a projector and then expressed regret at doing
so.

I would go the projector if it's mainly for DVDs. I bought a 37 inch plasma TV 3
years ago. For the money I spent then I could buy a 42 inch plasma and a
projector today. :(

Anyone buying a plasma or LCD for $5000+ is nuts imo. Get a $600 80cm
for just basic TV veiwing and a WXGA projector for "serious" veiwing
pleasure! :) For you price though, probably more like WSVGA. Gotta have the
dark room though. Not pitch black but just no direct, uncovered light
sources.

Hi Thornton...
Well my views on the Pj route is well known on various forums on this
subject as I have the Infocus 4805, like you we wanted a big picture
and that's what we now have and it bloody awesome. My wife wanted a
Plasma but one look at this Pj convinced her. Still watch our TV set
occasionally.
Watching DVD's is unreal its just like being there on the 2.2m screen,
and a whole bunch of friends who have seen this Pj have either bought
one or saving up. We paid $3800 all up including Screen, Pj and
Cables.
There are many new model Pj's on the market and the new AE700
Panansonic is getting good reviews, Sanyo and Hitachi too, I think the
Infoucus DLP 4805 is better IMO. Not one of 50 who have seen the
picture at our abode have seen rainbows or anything else, but if you
sit to close you may.
