Mpeg to VOB big loss in quality |
|
|
Have Plextor Convertx, Phillips 642, Hi8 camcorder
When I make an mpeg file, copy it directly to a DVD and play
it on my Phillips 642, the quality is very good.
But when I convert the image to VOB, using Tmpgmc, so that the
movie can be played on other DVD players (That can't play MPEGS)
the quality goes down.
Any comments ?

Re-encoding will always mean a loss of quality, and if it's a non-spec MPEG
file, TMPGenc will re-encode it to be compatible. If it's SVCD, you have the
option to ignore it and author without re-encoding, which works on some DVD
players.
You don't really give any information on your original MPEG, but why do you
make it non-compliant with DVD in the first place? |

Are you using "TMPGEnc DVD Author" to produce the vobs?
If so it seems strange that the quality is reduced, as I don't think it has
the ability to edit any "quality" settings. It will only cut and splice and
create menus chapters etc, but not change the image quality, which is
determined at the *encoding* stage, and DVD author does not have any
encoding capability. |

TMPGEnc DVD Author? I thought it didn't do any encoding/reencoding.

Yes, you're probably right. I haven't used TMPGenc for ages, and it probably
only re-encodes audio, not video. |

I have a mov file that is 2.1 GB and dropping it onto toast 6.0 lite to
burn, I end up with a vob file that is 700,584 KB. This feels wrong...?
What are your size changes? Are you doing mpeg or mpeg2? - I am trying
to figure this out...

Hello Mo, If you are using the DEFAULT settings on TMPGEnc it uses VBR with
a quality setting of 65(out of 100). That is probably why it doesn't look
too good. Change the quality setting to 90 or so.... then see how it looks.
Or, you can select a fixed bitrate - something like 7500KB or 8000KB(best).
