I have a Western Digital external 120G HD, USB 2.0. Can I transfer from my
miniDV camera, via 1394, directly to that drive? That would be a lot easier
(for me) than transferring a lot of data from my internal drives to the
external and capturing to the internals.

Mike K,

The simple answer is "No". Your camera uses a different interface than your
disk drive. Also, even if you had a Firewire-equipped (1394) interface on
your disk drive, the camcorder would not talk to it. Some of the newer
professional camcorders, particularly those for electronic news gathering
(ENG) applications, do have a direct to disk Firewire transfer capability,
but this is not found in consumer or "prosumer" products.

I guess I was a bit unclear. I don't want to hook the camera directly to the
external drive. I want to hook up the camera to the 1394 card in the PC, but
I want to capture my video to an external drive, not internal one. I was
wondering if these drives and the USB2.0 would be fast enough to transfer
the video through the PC and out to the external drive.Sorry, and thanks for
any input.

If you mean capture using a PC/ Laptop to the external drive - why not. If
you mean capture without the PC/ Laptop no.

I cannot see why you should have any problem - you connect the camera to
your computer by the firewire connection, then from your capture program
just select the external HD instead of your internal HD as the place to
store the file,. Easy.

I have successfully captured DV video via an IEEE-1394 PCI card and stored
it on an external USB 2.0 disk drive without losing frames. So the answer
is yes, you should be able to use an external USB 2.0 drive instead of an
internal disk drive. I used LaCie 250GB Porsche drives, one which had a
Maxtor core, and the other which had a Western Digital core. My only
caveat is that I am using Linux, not Windows. So I can't speak to the
performance characteristics of the Windows USB storage drivers or file
system.

Thanks for everyone's answers. As Rob was thinking, I was concerned about
the performance (frames dropped, etc). I'll give it a shot.
