I am trying to convert a dvd into divx and I am using the latest
software from divx.com. The problem I am having is that when
there is movement in close-up shots I am getting a distorted
effect, a bit similar to the interlacing effect. The same thing
happens if I leave the default 'progressive' setting or if I choose
'Preserve interlace'. Any ideas?

p.s. It's not a bit rate issue - it happens also if I up the bit rate
to maximum.

if you preserve the interlace then you are bound to still have it - what you
should be doing is de-interlacing.
not used that software so can't say how that would be done.

Speaking in region 1 terms:

First, I've never found Dr. Divx's management of interlace, when
converting TV captures or DVDs from TV camera sources, to be of
any value.

But, second, on what are you planning to play the resultant AVI
file? If your target display is a standard TV, then interlacing
will be unnoticed - whereas digital PC monitors will highlight
interlacing in some to all lateral motion - exaggerated by
reduced bit rate, IMNSHO.

If the source DVD was transcribed from film, then interlace
should not be a problem and, if this is the case, you might have
a different problem.

The two programs which I use to convert MPEG2 capture or DVD
VOBs to Divx/Xvid AVIs are:
FlaskMPEG for DVDs, VDub-MPEG2 for captures. I very often
deinterlace with both programs, when the source is interlaced
and needs the filter applied for progressive digital display.
However, most often, it's just as easy - and probably produces a
better picture - to leave the interlacing intact, when you plan
to playback on an interlaced TV, or a progressive that has
interlace management built into its logic.

I might add, as a former Philips DVP642-37 owner, it could not
handle single pass xvid/divx conversions from interlaced MPEG2
(captures, for the most part) without the filter applied - the
interlace artifacts where overwhelming, even when played on a
standard TV. The LiteOn 2001 would play the same files to the
same TV with no evidence of interlace. So, there is also the
playback device to consider!

I am not sure how I can know whether my dvd is interlaced or not,
but if it is I need my divx to remain interlaced
for best tv viewing. (my dvd player can play divx so I would
therefore benefit from leaving the interlace)

I have just tried deinterlacing and it still happens, i.e. it's probably
not an interlace issue
