JVC has several digital vhs recorders
http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?productId=PRD4603000&pathId=50
which have an input labeled "2 x I.Link Terminal (IEEE 1394), DV input only
for camcorders." Would it be possible (or would it even make sense) to
connect the cable TV set-top-box to this recorder by Firewire? My cable TV
company is Insight., but I am not currently using their digital cable feed
and I have no idea if their converter offers 1394 output.

I wish I could be more specific, but digital converters are now required to
offer various output ports, including IEEE1394, known as FireWire from Apple
Computer, Inc. As for your ability to record using the IEEE1394 port I
cannot say, but it certainly sounds like a winner. As always, consult your
owners manual.

Although some cable boxes have firewire, it may or may not be enabled.
The cable company and turn on or off various outputs depending on what
you pay for and/or what they are willing to support. Many people have
digital boxes with disabled DVI ports, for example.

This is no longer true. There is now a federal requirement to make various
ports available for use including DVI, IEEE1394, Component, Composite, RF,
and perhaps one day, HDMI

Source please? That way everyone has some ammunition with their cable

companies that have recently or in the past actually issued firmware updates
that have disabled those ports on the digital STBs.

Don't know if it's true or not, but I'm sure that at least Adelphia would
charge you for it, like the DVR cable box. In addition to the increased
monthly equipment rental fee, there's also a monthly fee to be able to use
the DVR function's.

One of their representative's with whom I discussed this with, swore up and
down that this is a service, and it cost's them money to provide it. When I
asked him to explain the technology of their 'service' he could not. What
is the 'service' to sending out a few more bytes of info when the box is
authorized (?).
