divX Pro files on DVD18 ROM |
|
|
I have a question. Is is possible to view divX video files on a regular DVD
player if they are stored on a DVD18 ROM?
Thanks,
Ian.

What's a DVD18 disc? If you mean the next gen DVD version, I did'nt think
that it had been finalised.

A DVD18 ROM is a 4 layer - 2 layers on each side DVD. It is Glass Mastered
and has been used internationally for some time now. What I need to know is
if I can put thirty-five 1.5 hour divx pro files onto this type of DVD and
still be able to play it on normal DVD players.

If you mean by "regular dvd player" the ordinary cheap players that
play ordinary DVD (and sometimes VCD/SVCD) movie type disks and
nothing else, then the answer is "NO". These players have chipsets
which only decode mpeg2 format video material, and the disc must be
authored in the standard way.
These "regular" players will not play divx files whatever disk they
are recorded on, cd-rom, dvd-rom , whatever.
To play any kind of divx encoded video file needs a player which has a
hardware chipset which support mepg4 decoding.
Players such as this are made by Kiss, Philips, Yamada, liteon, and
others. These players are certainly getting more common, and are quite
cheap now, but even so they are not "regular" DVD players as most
people understand the term. I do not know if any such players will
recognise a DVD18 disk. |
