How much power is needed ? |
|
|
Hi everybody.
I'm having a party in a GARDEN, that means outside. I've never had any
parties outside so I'm not sure about the sound system.
There should be about 50-60 people, and the sound doesn't have to be
super loud (I'm aiming around 100 dB). Just for dancing. this is not a
rave party nor a rock festival :-)
I want to have a decent sound in a 10m x 10m area (30ftx30ft) and I was
wondering if a 2x480W amplifier would be enough...
If you have any links or info for setting up sound system outdoor, let
me know.
Thanks

100 dB is not super loud ?? To each his own, I guess.
Last July we held a 50th wedding anniversary party for my parents. A 30 x
30 foot area was set up at my brother in laws place. I brought the stereo
I use outdoors on my deck at home. The amp is a couple of LM1875 chips,
rated at 20W each. Speakers were home made consisting of Radio Shack car
speakers. Not audiophile grade or hi-tech by any means, but my point is
that 20W per channel was Plenty of power. I am guessing 85 or so dB
throughout the area, and the volume control nowhere near turned up full.
Had to turn it down for people to talk etc.
Now if you really and truly do want 100 dB, then you may need more than 20
watts, but holy cow 480 watts ...

You wanted 85 dB, he wants 100 dB
You used 20 watts to get 85 dB so...
10 dB over 20 watts is 200 watts
15 dB over 20 watts is 632 watts. |

Well according to this http://www.chs.ca/info/noise/book3.html
85dB is just a noisy restaurant.
Before the DJ there will be some live music, with some horns so I don't
think 85dB will be enough after that :-)
Thanks for the info. |

Nah, it's not really. Try to keep an indoor live band under 100dB
with acoustic drums. Woof.
Also depends on A or C weighting. Switch to C weighting that takes
bass into more account and numbers around 100-105 are quite easy to
come by and folks not be too bothered by it for short periods if the
sound is full and not harsh. Consult OSHA charts for safety
ramifcations though.

Should be plenty, assuming a speakers of any sort of efficiency.
Getting enough SPL is one thing, but getting a full thumping sound is
another. Speaker selection is the primary thing there.
Best Regards,

Plenty loud for swing band dancing, not loud enough for disco. Assume
that it is going to rain, and have big plastic trash bags, tarps, etc.
ready to
hand for covering things up quickly. Safety grounds on your electricity
are even more important in wet muddy ground. Make sure that you only
use three prong cords and no moron has broken off the ground pins. The
ground will be muddy once a few drinks get spilled, so that is a near
universal at outdoor events.
Have a few spray cans of insect repellent and give every cable and leg
holding stuff up off the ground a spritz once you have it setup. You
really
don't want to be bringing all the crawling insects from the site back home
with you. You will be wanting the bug spray yourself when the blood
sucking insects come out after you as well. If the thing is going to be up
for very long, you will need to check for colonizing bees wanting to
build a new nest inside of your speakers and amps and so on.
check the weather report. Being hit by lightning stings. Hail leaves
bruises and tends to break the glass on the meters. Gusts of wind will
blow things over to land on your foot. Those plastic bags you brought
for rain protection are good for keeping the muddy dirty gear from getting
everything else dirty while you are bringing stuff back to clean up and put
away.
