8 hours definitely looks worse than VHS (even EP.) I only use it for
time shifting and only when I can't change discs.
I find that somewhere between 4-6 is about equal to VHS, but at the
higher compression the digital artifacts are more noticeable,
especially in dark scenes or scenes with fast motion. In other words,
it can look better or worse depending on what you are recording.
When recording VHS to DVD if I use FR/3 hours for SP VHS recordings or
LP/4 hours for EP VHS recordings then I don't notice much difference.
