I'm shopping for a new DVD player. I want one that I can fast forward
any time I want to. None of this crap that locks out the FF button.
Also want to be able to hit MENU whenever I want. Are there any DVD
players out there that do this? Or ones that are hackable?

When you write "any time you want to" does that mean that you want to be
able to fast forward even those copyright-messages at the very beginning of
a DVD-movie, before it switches to the root menu? In that case, I think that
it depends on a DVD-movie in particular, NOT player.

What MENU? The menu of the DVD-movie, or the menu of the DVD-player?
If you meant the first alternative, the answer is the same as above. If you
were referring to menu of the DVD-player, I think that pretty much every
DVD-player allows you to access its preferences any time you want...

Yes, I want to be able to fast forward thru copyright messages,
previews, Content warnings, etc. A couple times recently a DVD messed
up while playing. I had to take the DVD out to clean. When I put it
back in, it forced me to watch all the warnings and even all the
previews again! That sucks. Almost makes me want to go back to VHS!
And yes, it depends on the movie. Some are worse than others. I want a
DVD player that allows you to hit the FF any time I want to and not give
me that stupid circle with the line thru it meaning it won't let me do
what I want to do.

Legally they cant sell them with with the PUO(Prohibited User Operations),
disabled. But there are some that can be hacked to turn it off. If a
company is caught selling them that way they could lose their mpeg2 license
which would essentially put them out of the dvd player business.

Go back to VHS if its just too inconvenient for you. Anytime a dvd is
removed, unless your player has some type of memory function to remember
where you left off, by design they must go through the warnings and such,
based on how the dvd was authored.

I've seen DVD Players for children that may do what you want. A quick
search of Amazon found the GoVideo DJ350 (search for DJ350) or try
this link:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000C86JB/qid=1099585267/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-7499582-8885457?v=glance&s=electronics
It has "EZ Play - Skip ads and menus and go to the start of the movie"
- Whether that means it will skip the FBI warnings too, I don't know.

BTW, I've found that on my Panasonic that sometimes when FFwd doesn't
work I can still use Next Chapter to skip the ads and FBI warning.
Usually though I just put the DVD in and then go fix a snack. By the
time I get back it is on the main menu and ready to play.
