What type of AVI file? There are dozens of different types of AVI files.
For example, there is "Divx" and there are several different types of
Divx encoding schemes, but they are all AVI files. Then there is "Xvid".
Xvid is open source and is perhaps the most popular encoding scheme for
video files which are distributed via BitTorrent and is also popular on
the NewsGroups because of their small size. Xvid is also an AVI file and
there are many more types of AVI files. There are freeware utilities that
report which codec was used to encode a particular AVI file. I usually
use "Gspot" .... check out http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
I have a Philips DVP642 player which does a good job with most Divx AVI
files but which cannot play most Xvid AVI files. It also plays most MPEG4
files. When I see an interesting video that I would like to download, I
always check the size of the file. If it is suspiciously small, it is
probably Xvid encoded and I avoid it like the plague. Sure it will play
fine on my computer, but I prefer to watch my videos on my TV set.

Seems to me that most of people who have this player have some really bad
luck with Xvid movies, which is what I can't understand.
I bought a DVP630 (Euro version of 642) and it played every single, and I
mean every single avi file that I put into it. This even includes Xvid
encoded movies with AC-3 sound (which is, according to many DVP630/642
owners, the most incompatible video/audio encoding for this player) !!!
I got my hands on 2CD Xvid-rip (double bit rate) of "The Last Samurai" with
AC-3 sound. I'm telling you, this movie looked so good that everybody who
saw it being played back from my player couldn't tell it was Xvid. They
thought it was a normal DVD. Picture was crystal clear. The sound was
reproduced in pure Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC-3 emulation) and the Swedish
subtitles (in *.SUB format) were nearly perfect (except from italic formated
text that had '[i]' in front of every sentence).
So, it seems like you guys are really getting some bad shit from the
Internet. I'm telling you - Xvid works on DVP630/642! |

If I burn avi, to DVD should I use DVD-ROM(ISO) or DVD_ROM (UDF), have nero
version 6.
Thanks I have found these replies very informative and I think I am begining
to get the hang of it.
Thanks again

Hi,
I know I am painful, but all newbies have to start somewhere.
Say I download the manchurian candidate at 250,000kb avi part 1 and same for
part 2. I have them sitting in my download file, then I use the freeware to
determine what the make up of the file is. Do I then put it into shrink, or
what, and then with nero what do I burn it as, can I compress them enough to
get on the one dvd and do I just drag 1 and 2 over and it will burn as one,
after compression. So far I have only done the copying of DVD's.
Thanks Roo

Well, if you want to simply put your AVI files to DVD as they are and watch
them as AVI/DivX, then you simply use the DVD-ROM(ISO) option in Nero, which
is, of course, what always should be used when you are putting things on
your DVD-R as files. |

I'm not going to try to answer your questions in this post partially,
because I'm afraid I don't really understand what you are trying to do. You
write something about using "freeware" to "determine what rthe make up of
the file is". I'm sorry, but I don't understand a clue of what you wrote
here...
Hopefully, the answer that I gave you on the other question in another post
bellow will be enough...

I've found that of all the .avi's that I've downloaded that will play
fine on my computer, the DVP-642 won't play about one in ten of them. |

Well, okay...fair enough. Don't you think that it's still good, when a
player doesn't play 1 of 10 AVI files. That looks like a good statistic to
me :-))) |
