One problem is if the user sells his Panasonic DVD recorder and buys a

from the Panasonic DVD recorder.
The same problem would occur if I recorded on my Panasonic VHS at EP
speed as not many VHS recorders have this speed.

Well, I only use DVD-RAM for stuff I plan to delete. Anything else I'm
recording to DVD-R and checking to make sure the recordings play on
another DVD Player and my computer. Also, whenever I get a DVD Burner
for my computer I'll make sure that it can read both formats.

If you have a hard drive in the DVD recorder then this would not be a
problem, but the cost of the DVD recorder increases.

Definitely true. Right now my plan is on getting a DirecTV DVR
sometime next year, if they really do come out with no fee unit
without all the bells and whistles of Tivo. Even if it doesn't allow
editing of programs I should still be able to record to DVD-R and use
pause to remove the commercials, similar to how I copy VHS now.

There's no incompatibility with mainstream dvd players unless you're sloppy
and burn VR to -r for instance.

Is VR the same as FR (Flexible Recording)? I've burned several DVD-R
discs using FR without problems.

No. VR is a different format of movie structure. My cheap DVD set-top
player plays it, my Sony doesn't. Typical...

FR is just a way of adjusting the bit rate to make a movie fit on a
DVD.
