Is this true about Panasonic DVD recorders? |
|
|
I'm told that if you record a DVD disk on a Panasonic recorder then
you can only play back the disk on a Panasonic DVD recorder. Which
means you can't play it back on a different brand of DVD player.
Is this true?

**I think you can play unfinalized discs only on the Panasonic but
once you finalize them, they should play in anything that can handle
DVD-R/RAM. I've played a Panasonic-burnt disc in my Sony Vaio.

And I've played them in a large variety of players. As long as any particular
player does the right disc (-R or -Ram) it'll read it.
And remember, some players don't to VR mode, which might confuse the issue. I
sometimes copy VR mode -Rams onto -R discs for longer-term use as they play
fine on dvd players that do VR mode. An -R like that wouldn't play in non
VR-capable players. Has nothing to do with Panasonic specifically (-RW discs
do VR too btw and Panny's don't write to them). Nex |

This is partly true, if you record on DVD-RAM (which you will do, if the
recorder doesn't have a harddrive).
DVD-RAM will only playback in newer DVD players (and recorders) from the
Matsushita company and partners (Panasonic, JVC and Toshiba).
Panasonic recorders also records on read-only DVD-R discs, but again is the
harddrive is missing thats not the type of discs you'll be recording on.
To sum up:
If you buy a Panasonic model with a harddrive, the lack of supported formats
in Panasonic recorders won't cause you any trouble. Then you'll be recording
on harddrive, and copying to the cheap DVD-R discs afterwards. No problem.
If you buy a DVD recorder only from Panasonic, then you could end up living
in an isolated world where you can't share your recordings with your friends
and family. That is, if the don't own Matsushita derived equipment also.

Yes. But who records everything directly onto DVD-R, do you?
If you use DVD-RAM for daily recordings, for the benefits of timeslip,
editing - and eraseing(!) - the Panny recorders aren't really suited for
people who sometimes share recordings. That is, unless the people you share
recordings with also use equipment derived from Matsushita.

Yes and No.
If you record to DVD-RAM, then the discs will not likely play on other
players. However, DVD-RAM is mainly useful for time shifting and
recording programs you do not plan to keep, so it is unlikely you
would want to share such recordings either. If you did need to share a
DVD-RAM recording and the person doesn't have a player that supports
the format then you could copy the program to VHS, and even back to
DVD-R.
If you record to DVD-R and finalize the disc it should play on most
players. The DVD-Rs I've recorded on my Panasonic play fine on both my
computer and a standalone (Samsung) DVD Player. Even recording made in
the Flexible Recording mode do not cause any compatibility issues.
I use DVD-R for anything I plan to keep. If I need to share something
recorded to DVD-R then compatibility should not be a problem.
I use DVD-RAM for recording everyday stuff that I plan to delete after
watching and I don't worry about compatibility.

This means that you need to know in advance. No sharing of recordings you
didn't know about, and no sharing of edited recordings (ie. cut out
commercials).
Face it, the Panasonic DVD-only recorders do have some disadvantages in that
area.
BTW, the development of DVD-RAM has come to an end now. The road map stops
at the current 4,7 GB capacity, no further development will be done trying
to expand the size to compeat with dual-layer nor to move to blue laser
technology.

And how would your share recordings if you had another (non Panasonic)
DVD recorder?

For recordings on DVD-R, DVD-RW (videomode), DVD+R og DVD+RW I would just
lend them the disc. All theese formats will play in most DVD players.
Theres another format that will cause problems like DVD-RAM does, and that
is DVD-RW recorded in VR Mode. The best format for sharing is DVD+RW,
because it do give some editing options while it still plays in normal DVD
players.
The real problem with Panasonic recorders is not the DVD-RAM format, because
its a great format for timeshifting and more. The problem is that Panasonic
avoids any other formats in their effort to promote DVD-RAM.
They could easily have their recorders write DVD-RW as well, and allow
sharing on medias that can be reused. But they don't want to pay royalty to
Pioneer. JVC on the other hand, has some nice recorders which support
DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW.
But again, all this is only true if you don't have a harddrive in the
recorder. With a harddrive to record on, the formats and their benifits
becomes a secondary thing.

Thanks all for your feedback.
One problem is if the user sells his Panasonic DVD recorder and buys a
different brand then he may not be able to play back recording made
from the Panasonic DVD recorder.
The same problem would occur if I recorded on my Panasonic VHS at EP
speed as not many VHS recorders have this speed.
Another problem may occur if you're recording a valuable program on a
CD-R disk and find a fault in the CD-R disk causing problems when
playing back the recording.
It's seems better make a test recording on a DVD-RW disk then after
formatting the CD-RW disk use it to make the recording then use the
computer to copy the CD-RW disk to CD-R.
If you have a hard drive in the DVD recorder then this would not be a
problem, but the cost of the DVD recorder increases.

(disregarding all your CD talk)
Then just be careful to record your keepers in -r format on the Panny and
you'll be fine. As for your -Rams, use them for temp recording and editing.
When you decide to keep something, just inhale the product from -Ram into
DVDAuthor or a similar prg, and burn to -r. (Panny's don't burn -RW)
There's no incompatibility with mainstream dvd players unless you're sloppy
and burn VR to -r for instance. As for errors recording to a -r in a Panny,
I've recorded *hundreds and hundreds* of -r discs with my old E30 and only
once, due to a disc defect, was there a problem.
Sometimes you *can* be too careful for home use if it means not buying a
machine and missing out for a few months.
My advice, just do it. Enough theorizing already. Take her down and do the
wild thang, I say! Nex |
