TiVo better get this right. Otherwise the first time in a SuperBowl a
Coors Beer ad pops up while I'm fast forwarding through a Budweiser
commercial, all hell will break loose on Madison Avenue.

:-) How about a Ford popup during a Chevy ad?

Anybody know if they're talking about fast forward or about the skip 30
seconds "undocumented" function or both? Can we hope that since the
skip isn't official and non-usenet users don't know about it that it
will be left alone? Also, wonder if the popups are going to happen
ANYTIME the FF is used or only if it's used during a commercial?

What if we don't allow a software update? Will that not allow this thing to
work?

It depends on how fast you are on the button.

I've seen current TiVoMatic thumbs even when using 30-second skip, if I
hesitate at all between skips, and that commercial is tagged. It
*immediately* goes away when the 30-second skip is pressed again and you
are off that commercial, so as long as the new ones work the same way,
it's no big deal to me.

Only during FF, only over ads, and only for the same product the ad
was for.

Sure - and you also won't get TiVoToGo, any bug fixes, etc. And TiVo
can, if they want, turn off service to units that don't upgrade by
some date.

What happens with a required update for program guide improvements?
How pleased would you be to see your program guide disappear?
I don't know that such an update has ever been released, but
that doesn't rule out such a change.

Some people complain about not receiving software updates and others
don't want them. Can everyone be satisfied?

It's possible that would prevent it, but not guaranteed. (You don't know,
the TivoMatic functions may already allow this.)

The real question, though, is how would you prevent updates?

Sry, to prevent the majority of responses, I should have said that I am
familiar with most of the techniques espoused on DDB, among other places.
I also know their (huge, gaping) limitations. I was somewhat humorously
questioning if the OP was also familiar with those limitations...

Better abandoned than updated into nonusability on unsub'd units.

Since we are paying for the TiVo service, we should not be subjected to
these ads. If the TiVo service was free, I could understand, but this
is just ridiculous!

OK. But when they need $25 a month to continue providing the service cause
they are no longer SUBSIDIZING the cost with other revenue generators, will
you still be willing to pay?
