The problem will be that like virtually all freeware/open source

But it's only a matter of time before that improves.

Riiiiiiiiight.
And that is so borne out by the open source record to date.
Not.
Don't get me wrong -- I'm glad the OSSies exist. I run a linux box at
home myself -- have been for 10+ years.
Unfortunately, the processes that go into making a really good UI are
just too antithetical to canonical OSS ideology.
The only way a OSS project will get good UIs is for one of those
dastardly, evil corporations (like IBM, say) to build a project from
scratch, in house, using its resources, designers, usability
professionals, etc., and then release it to the OSS world.
Good UI will never come from the "bazaar".

But the UI design is already done. What's to stop
someone from copying the good parts of the tivo UI in
their own open source project? The tivo UI is pretty
much a script layer running through a TCL/TK-like engine,
and to its credit, tivo has a simple, effective, and IMHO
easily emulated UI. Anyone creating a tivo clone could
elect to use TCL or some other high level UI infrastructure
and very rapidly prototype a tivo UI. |

I never said it couldn't be done, but I agree w/ Rich here, it usually
isn't done. Open source software coders don't like to spend time on
"trivialities" like UI. Once the interesting technical bits of a
project are done, they move on. The exceptions are well-funded projects
usually backed by a large well-known company like IBM.
Also, I wouldn't suggest they copy TiVO *too* closely. Copyright/Patent
issues would quickly crop up, and I don't blame TiVO for taking measures
to protect their design.
