Divx vs VCD |
|
|
Hi,
I would like to have more details about the difference between the Divx and
VCD (other than encoding format). In fact I've read that the resolutions are
the same 352 x 264 and it is said that one dvd will fit into one CD for vcd
quality, the same being true for Divx quality. So why would one choose Divx
over the Vcd format if the movie is going to be played on a stand alone
DVD/MPEG4 player ?
Regards.

VCD needs 2 cds.
xVCD, mVCD are on 1 cd but lower bitrate.
There's a chart on this site to compare:

DivX has no limitations as for the resolution and even the one you wrote for |
VCD seems a bit strange to me. The reason why to choose DivX over VCD
(MPEG1) is quality. With VCD the quality is something similar to VHS tape
and worse, with DivX you get something subjectively comparable to DVD. If
you can choose between the two, don't hesitate and use DivX (or XVid). |

There is no way a full-length feature movie can be fit onto a standard VCD.
The maximum playing time is the same as for music, typically 74 or 80 mins.
The movie must either be split between two CD's or else recorded using a
non-standard system (XVCD) with varying results.
Three-quarters of a VCD is occupied by data that adds nothing to the picture
information as it is formatted for existing NTSC and PAL video systems. A CD
encoded with DivX can hold four times as much picture information either in
the form of higher resolution, longer playing time or a mixture of the two.
More importantly when downloading, a DivX (.avi) file can be downloaded in a
quarter of the time of a VCD (.mpg) file with the same amount of picture
information. In addition, many so-called VCD files need to be re-encoded
before they can be played on a stand-alone machine as opposed to a PC.

Actually there are a set of TMPGE templates available for download that can
encode a 100 min movie into a 1 disc VCD with no loss of quality compared to
a standard VCD.(KVCD)

You might want to buy a DVD burner and stick to standard DVD files (mpeg 2).
The DVD burner is getting pretty cheap now, especially since the HD DVD
burner might come out soon (or already has?). If you like Divx files, you
can put several of them on a single DVD and buy a cheap player ($75) to play
them. And blank DVD media is getting dirt cheap. If you record TV shows,
you can burn the mpeg 2 files onto DVD. Much easier to deal with than CD's.
