Hi, I have $150 to spend on a camcorder light for the future camcorder
I'll be buying. I'd like one with its own power source.

Recommendations?

A lot of folks are quite happy with the Bescor lights.
Pages 14 & 15 at http://www.bescor.com/ seem to be what you're after and the
price fits your budget.

Thanks. Also, what's the affordable remote mic of choice?

I know that certain Audio Technicas are highly rated but you'd have to do a
Google search on this group for specific models. My choice (Lectrosonic
wireless) definitely does not fall in the "affordable" category.

Mike

Very good, Mike. Keep it up and I might even forgive you for your past
transgressions.

Right, looked at the Lectronsonic and almost had a heart attack when I
read the price. I then found some Audio Technicas products. Anyone know
about these? http://www.equipmentemporium.com/wireless1.htm

Gary,

You didn't specify the camcorder that you'll be getting. :-)

I would recommend Frezzi lights. They're very compact and are highly
rated. You would have to revise your $150 figure. But it would be worth
it. They are rated much higher than the Bescors. I was also thinking of
getting a Bescor light, but while doing my research, I decided to get
something more substantial. While there is nothing wrong with them, I
preferred to get something that was going to last over the long haul.

In the area of microphones, I recommend the Sennheiser K6/ME66. That's
also going to be more expensive, but it is a great combo. From what I've
read elsewhere (<http://www.camcorderinfo.com>, <http://www.dvinfo.net/>,
<http://www.uemforums.com/2pop/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=>), the
consensus was to spend a little more $$$ and opt for the better choice.
The Audio Technica mics are very good, but I wanted the stereo shotgun,
and it was out of my price range. So I opted for the K6/ME66 combo.

Keep in mind that depending on the configuration of your camcorder, to use
a microphone with an XLR connector you may have to get an XLR to minijack
converter, such as the BeackTek audio adapters
(<http://www.BeachTek.com>). Once again, this is going to set you back
$250 for BeachTek DXA-6. You can go as cheap as $170 for the DXA-2s if
you have a compact camcorder.

As you may have already seen, this stuff isn't cheap; get the best
equipment you can afford if this is a hobby. If this is going to be a
business endeavor, then you're going to have to opt for prosumer-grade
equipment (or better).

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Rocky

Thanks, Rock.

Unless told otherwise, I'll be buying a Panasonic PV-GS200 sometime in
early January. Everything I've read about this baby has been positive,
and I'm tickled to death that it's a 3-chiper. I'm hoping it will get
under $600 after the new year.

I meant a remote mic. I already have a small shot-gun mic and am not
happy with it at all. Are BeachTek's really that much? Gee, I hate to
wind-up spending more for the required accessories than the cam itself,
but it looks like I've not no choice.

But those accessories will last you longer than your camera, and if
you decide to
sell them, you will have relatively lost less money than on the
camera, if you sell the camera.

Martin's right. I've had the same light kit, tripod and shotgun & wireless
mics for over 15 years. I can't say the same about my camera and videotape
recorder. Things like cameras change drastically from year to year while
others (like the items I mentioned) never go "out of style". Pay the money
up front for the good stuff and you won't regret it - other than the initial
hit to your pocket book, that is :-(

They're damn near bulletproof is why :-)

I'd buy anything Fred Ginsburg (president of the company) sells/recommends.
Besides being a great guy, he's extremely knowledgeable.
