This isn't so bad. While you are FF through a commercial, some static
banner is going to pop up.
If every commercial has one, it might even be easier to skip commercials
and come off FF at the right time... as soon as the banner disappears.

Part of that has a smiley. Part of that is from someone who liked Wink
Interactive TV. Part is the reality that doing "something" about
commercials is a way to preserve the ability to FF through them, and fend
off lawsuits about enabling commercial skipping technologies.

Maybe my cable company's DVR isn't such a bad idea after all...

What the heck is the big deal?

I could see if they were disabling FFW or 30-sec-skip on
these ads, but all they're talking about is putting up
an image while you're FFWing over certain ads. So what?

Now, I can certainly understand people seeing this and worrying
about what might be next.

But what's so bad about this specifically?

Intrusive *maybe* you could make an argument for - but how is it
inconvenient? Nothing at all changes about how you use the box. If
you're alread FF'ing through the ads, you still do. Now instead of
just a blipvert on the screen you have a blipvert with a static pop-up
in the corner. You are free to ignore it.

I agree 100%. I have no problem at all. Hey, if you want to go to the
cable DVR, go ahead. You get what you pay for.

Nothing, unless your an advertiser. The article didn't say if these banner
ads would be for the products being FF through or not, but they did say that
the banner ads would be offering contest entries, giveaways or links to
other ads, which could easily lead one to infer that these banners may not
have anything to do with the broadcast commercial. I know that if my
company were paying that kind of money to produce and air a TV ad, having
someone elses ad pop up over mine just because my ad is being FF is not
going to sit well with my companies legal dept. As a Tivo user, I don't FF
through commercials because I don't want to see the commercials. I FF
through commercials so that I can get to the next segment of the show I'm
watching so that I can continue with watching it.

The banner will be triggered by a tag in the signal provided by the

You'll still be able to do this exactly the same way.

Today when an iPreview tag is hit in a comercial, the thumb icon appears and
the image continues streaking by in the background. This change is to add
another image, provided by the advertiser, to show in addition to the thumb
icon. Meaning you'll have a better chance a knowing what the thumb is for
without having to stop fastforwarding. TiVoPony posted the details on Tivo
Community.

Doesn't sound so bad when you look at the details instead of the headline.

Well I don't know about you, but when I fast forward past commercials, I
still have to watch the screen to see when they are over. Now if the new
ad doesn't allow you to see what's really showing, then it could cause a
problem. Although since I don't have a sub, it probably won't effect me.

No.

At least you don't have to watch those.
