Circuit City has a Tivo Series 2 TCD540004 with 40 hrs. for 199.99

Circuit City also has a RCA DVR80 DirectTV with Tivo with 70hrs. for 99.99

Half the price with almost twice the time..............I don't get it. Why buy
the more expensive unit if they both do the same thing?

In short.....

The first one is a Stand Alone ... used for off air and cable systems
and satellite systems (Directv/Dishnetwork) you already own. One tuner.
Cost $12 per month.
The 2nd one has built-in Directv won't record cable/offair/Dishnetwork.
Directv subsidizes<sp> this unit (You have to sign up for X months) 2
tuners. Cost $5 per month or free if you have X package.

This one is a "standalone" TiVo. It's used with anything that's not DirecTV
and contains
an MPEG encoder (which is a good chunk of $$$) to convert any incoming video
into
MPEG format.

This one is specifically for DirecTV and works only with DirecTV. It's
cheaper because
it doesn't contain MPEG encoders since the DTV stream is already in MPEG
format.

They don't do quite the same thing... or, rather, they're intended to
work in different environments.

The TCD540004 is a "standalone" or "analog" TiVo system. It will work
with almost any source of video - over-the-air antenna, cable TV with
or without a cable box, or DirecTV or Dish Network with a separate
satellite receiver. It can even work with certain combinations of
sources (e.g. satellite for some channels, and over-the-air antenna or
cable-without-decoder-box for other channels). It re-digitizes
(compresses) the analog video system. The monthly subscription
service fee is $12.95, and there's a fixed-price lifetime-of-the-
product subscription fee available as well. It supports some
networking features (e.g. the Home Media Option, online program
scheduling via a TiVo web site).

The DirecTV receiver with TiVo service works *only* with DirecTV - it
receives and records the satellite signal directly, and has no ability
to record analog video signals. It has two tuners, and can thus
record (or let you view) two separate programs at once (as long as you
wire up the dish correctly). Video quality is identical to that of a
real-time DirecTV program, since it records the MPEG video signal from
the satellite without having to recompress it. The monthly service
fee is lower ($5/month); it's waived if you buy the high-end DirecTV
subscription. No lifetime subscription is available. This product
does not currently support the Home Media Option, online program
scheduling, or other networking features.

Different products, different feature sets, different costs.

rakblight2@aol.com (Rakblight2) shaped the electrons to say:

Others have explained that these are different products.

Also note there is currently a $100 rebate on the first one, so
they're the same price in the end.
