TiVO without Service - what do I get or don't I get? |

If I buy a Series 2 TiVo and choose not to subscribe to the service plan,
what features/functions will I be able to get or which features/ functions
will I lose? Thanks.

I believe a Series 2 TiVo without a subscription will still hurt
if you drop it on your foot, and you can still sell it on Ebay.
You might be able to watch TV on an antenna connected through
it. Other than that, I think you lose all functionality.

I keep wonderwing why somebody would buy a Series 2 TiVo and not

He wants to save as much money as he can (especially on a recurring
basis) while maximizing his ability to do things. There is noting wrong
with wanting to do that, it's just that the basic functionality of the TiVo
is provided as a monthly service.

Toshiba sells a unit with Basic Tivo. Only get 3 days schedule, no
season pass etc. I scgedule lke a VCR - by date and time. But once it
does record it now adds info. Basic is FREE. Is it good? Depends how
much effort you are willing to put into setting up recording.

An unsubscribed series2 is as equally functional as a series 1 that is not
plugged into an elecrical outlet. |

If it is a standard Series 2, you won't be able to do anything at all.
If it is one of the Series 2 with DVD burner units, "TiVo Basic" is
free, and allow you to use the TiVo without a subscription.

I believe the newer (Humax) DVD(-R) Tivo units actually don't have "TiVo
Basic".
The Pioneer DVD-R units do, and I believe the Toshiba DVD (non -R) does. It
should be an advertised feature - if you don't see it, don't assume it's
there.

WOW! tough crowd. I actually own 2 series 2 TiVo's to those wise ass
bozo's who posted flaming replies. I was asking my original question on

There were attempts at witty replies, but if you think you read flaming
replies, you really need to reread the thread.
It makses no difference who you were asking the question for. The answer is
that without a subscription, a series2 Tivo has no functions at all except
that it will tell you what you have to do to get a subscription.
