I have been waiting for Divx/Xvid to appear as a feature on portable DVD
players but I cannot find any which have this feature. Are the portable DVD
manufacturers avoiding Divx?

Archos has DivX in their PMPs, both the AV-4xx and the new PMP series. Mine
records and compresses straight from the source (TV, DVD, VHS) with DivX.
No problemos.

That is not a portable DVD player. I recognise that Divx is being used on
hard disk based systems (I use Divx to watch movies on a Palm) but it is
rarely featured on DVD systems.

OK, you are right, I missed out on the 'DVD' in the original question.

DVD players are dead anyways... (my view) to many format changes, use
a laptop, try one that can do HDTV speed.....
It is true that a DVD player is a lot cheaper, but if you have a laptop,
it will last and play all formats, you can edit too.
The DVD player will be defunct in a year (I have several now).
First you want CVD DVD then DivX then WMV then VP6 then what not (wavelet snow?).
And the laptop will need a blue light drive soon....
Better have a harddisk based model and fill the disk up from the main PC?

My kids watch endless DVDs and for travel, the quality of a DVD based system
is good and they are simple and cheap. I would put a load of Divx on one DVD
to save carrying loads of discs but few if any of the DVD players support
DVD.
They would break a laptop :)

Okay, you want BIGGER then here are a couple of DivX/DVD portables:

Shinco SDP1720A DVD/DivX player with 7" screen or a
Shinco SDP1250 DVD/DivX player with 10.2" screen.

Here's a link of DivX supported hardware:
