Akai PT4299HD...anyone? |
|
|
Having ruled out the Apex 42" with help from this forum, I have now turned
my sights to the Akai 42" Hd-ready rear projection.
Link: (
http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/97042/originURLEncoded/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.circuitcity.com%252Frpsm%252FN%252F20012866%252B20012867%252B20012870%252FcatOid%252F-12870%252Frpem%252Fccd%252Fcategorylist.do/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do#tabs )
It's $999 at CC, and I can get it from a local appliance place for $799.
Nice price! Especially on my budget... (will CC price match that?)
I read somewhere online that the Akai is acutally just a Samsung with a
different label on it, and I know I have liked the way the Sammys look when
I go to CC or best buy.
I have the DirecTV Tivo (non-HD) in the room where this will go, so the "all
digital" signal should still look nice right?
The reviews at cc.com are mostly pretty good, and knowing already that this
is an "entry level" unit, I don't need anyone comparing it to a $3500 DLP
set. I have not had much luck finding reviews on this particular model
anywhere else though, so....
Just wondering if any of YOU good folks have actual experience with this
set...would you recommend? Not looking to set the world on fire here, just
need a nice upgrade from my circa-1995 25" RCA tube TV that is our main TV
in the house.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

A couple of things to consider. You can't view HD
broadcasts with the setup you
described. To view HD you will need to get an HD tuner. If
you want one with TiVo
and DirecTV, it costs $1000. Without TiVo its $300.
Is it worth it? I think so.

Actually it is more Samsung-like, since that is who makes it. If you look
carefully at the pix you will see that it does not rate with top rung
products like Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Sony, and Toshiba. It is probably unfair
to put it in a class with Apex, since you can get some support for it.
Also, FYI, while I prefer top posting, I usually don't do so in this group
because the majority seem to prefer bottom posting. If you want to get
along here, you might want to adjust your posting style.

I purchased an Akai (Samsung) 55 inch HD Projection TV 4 months ago. The |
picture when viewing NTSC is superior to all but the top end MGA and Hitachi
sets and equal to them. As far as HD quality is concerned it rates with the
top end Hitachi. There are several caveats, slow to change channels, slow
to bring up guide (ch info), not enough information about dropouts, third
generation HD tuner not 4th and very rarely the registers in the mpu get bad
information. EX: sometime when doing auto convergence the fine line used to
trigger the sensor becomes 4 inches wide and you get an error message.
Unplugging the set to hard reset and the problem goes away. No control over
sound and a cpu whine, again a hard reset fixed it. These problems have
only shown up twice for the convergence and once for the sound. I have
pushed this set's mpu more than the typical customer would. I'm into the
Menu 20 times a day looking at signal levels and trying different features.
Other MFG sets have similar problems but they are usually due to power line
fluctuations not user use.
I service HD TV's (MGA, Hitachi, Samsung, Akai, Toshiba) and this is the
first new TV I have purchased. The price /picture was so good I sold my 97
Hitachi 50 inch and purchased the Akai.
A word of warning, while Hitachi is consistently good there is a WIDE
difference in picture quality between the Samsung models. They also cater
to salesmen that play the upgrade game. Several of their inexpensive models
have features grayed out that make a HUGE difference in picture quality.
Why gray out, why not eliminate the menu option?? so that the customer can
ask about it and see the difference. We had a Samsung in here for Store
stock service that had a very soft picture. So bad that I thought there was
something wrong with the electrical or optical focus. I pulled the back off
and tried to adj focus and found that focus was ok, when doing convergence
the lines were sharp and thin. The problem was signal processing (no
bandwidth).
The picture on my Akai was exceptional right out of the box and after I
finished with my obsessive compulsive adjustments, even better. |

Actually a "Re-Badged" Samsung with another name applied, complete with
Samsung's endemic service related aggravations.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but...
Does anyone notice this TV is listed at 1080i/480p instead of 720p? What am I giving up here? |
