Can anyone direct me to a list of turntables that have the larger .288"
spindle?

Never heard of one. Nobody else has come forward, yet!
1/4" (0.25") was the spindle standard, I thought.
[But, I digress, my dad had old shellacs that ran at 80 or 82 rpm.]
You haven't got some 78s with carelessly worn, reamed centres by any chance?
The sticky label is usually chafed as well. |

The most common for 33 1/3 RPM tables is .282" but some tables were (and
FAIK may still be ) made with .288" diameter. I've been machining and
polishing brass 45-RPM adapters for a couple of years and have potential
buyers asking if their table uses the larger size spindle. I haven't found a
list with that info yet and hope someone can help.

This misunderstanding about this 0.28x" diam (I never measured this, I
unknowingly assumed it to this day to be 0.25") would explain why some 78s
and LPs I owned were quite tight to slip on a Collaro Studio, or later
Garrard's 301 & 401, and lastly a Thorens TD124/ll, spindle, even on
Technics SP10 professionals.
Even some disc makers must have got it wrong by obviously making the holes
1/4".
Never had any problems with 45s, with or without centre size-reduction
adaptors.
Well, I never!! |

Dave B. here, I never gave it a thought either but I just put a micrometer
on the Dual 1019 that I acquired in 1968 son of a gun .2800 inches on the
spindle I always assumed to be 1/4 inch. Just goes to show, you never know
till you look. Thank you for the question.

The information remains quite elusive. Who would ever have thought? I'm
beginning to wonder if I would be ahead of the game to simply machine my
adapters to fit the larger spindles and if someone complains just supply
them with a smaller diameter unit. That really goes against my nature
because I must also make the O.D. small enough to work with less worn 45's
which means worn ones are even more sloppy. There comes a point the sound
quality takes a hit. Then again I can't be responsible for excessive center
hole wear on other peoples records.
