Mark Lloyd <mlloyd@5xxxmail.com5xxx> shaped the electrons to say:
| Quote: | Yeah, but if you have digital cable (which is all you need CableCARD
for) today, you probably have a cable box - and most digital cable
boxes do bidirectional communication already. So it is really status

CableCARD requires a cable box?
|
No, but the vast majority of people with digital cable don't have
CableCARD, they have a cable box.
So, yes, the way things went is - cable box was state of the art, and
does bidirectional. Then CC1.0 became state of the art, but it
doesn't do bidirectional, making it something of a step backwards in
features from the cable box. Next CC2.0 will be the state of the art,
and it will bring things back to where the cable box started, and take
it beyond that with multistream and new services.
So CC1.0 may offer more privacy than a cable box or CC2.0, with the
trade off of not having as many features. Most users will take the
features over the privacy, and in a year or so won't have any choice
as CC2.0 will roll out and CC1.0 will be hard to find.

Well said! With basic cable I still get more than I can ever watch.
Saves a lot of money, too. |

The commercials are roses?
A few are.
Geez, what world do you live in?
Even with a DVR, I still watch those HP photo-morphing
commercials. I thought they were brilliant. There are a
couple of the current Target commercials I like as well. There
used to be some VW ones I watched if I happend to land on one.

Although there can be a difference between watching it the first time,
and watching it the hundredth time.

A world a lot less anal than yours, I guess.
Obsessive compulsive behavior and a Type A personality leads to early
medical problems. Like I said, and another poster pointed out: Lighten up
and live well.
Accept the commercials when the technology allows me never to even see
them?
Is that what you mean by "lighten up"?
There's an old saying: if you're not outraged, you're not paying
attention. It's never been truer than in these modern times.
Besides, if it were not for those commercials, your cable bill would be
three times what it is.
You mean, if it weren't for the masses of sheeple who don't buy into the
simple technology that allows them to ignore those commercials.
|
And if they did, advertisers would find some way to defeat it (maybe
by manipulating the government, as they did with "copy protection")
that would be ever worse than the commercials we have now.
| Quote: | Yeah, they're useful for some things.
As an aside, I remember when I was a kid and would go to the movie theatre
(yes the WERE 'theatres' once upon a time), the manager had a table set up
for patrons to sign a petition to prevent "Pay Television". He was convinced
that it would be the end of the world if folks had the movie in their homes.
Newsweek (I think) just reported that in the 1950s, 63% of the public
went to see movies. That is now down to 9%.
Maybe that theater manager was right.
Theater owners are fighting back, with "destination" theaters that cost
$20/ticket.
|
What would that actually be?

Efficiency? Where the hell did that come from?
An intelligent person would rather not watch TV than watch commercials
nowadays. What does that say about those who claim that they *want* to
watch commercials?

I did have the superbowl on this year, and skipped everything BUT the
commercials.

In theory you could have one CC2.0 tuner in a DVR that could record 5
channels (streams) at the same time. Or have a multi-room system
where satellite boxes in other rooms could tune a channel different
from the one being watched on the main set, using the tuner in the
main box.
How the 5 streams are used is up to the product designer. Most likely
what we'll see firt is 'dual tuner' boxes which only need one 2.0 card
- today you'd need to rent 2 cards.

Not all of them. The CapitalOne "What's in your wallet" barbarians are
pretty funny. As are the contented Californina cows. I turn the sound
back on for these.
Mostly, though, I would agree with you.

The insurance commercial with the kid showing his robot to his parents

I remember an insurance commercial that showed a girl walking through
a construction site. This was supposed to show that she needed
insurance. I thought that what she needed was a hard hat.
