crossed wires in dvd player? |
|
|
Hi,
Someone gave me a DVD player (not as a gift, and it was known to have
some problems), and I can't get it to function. The on/off button doesn't
work, but several buttons will turn the player on and off (the "stop",
"play", "fast forward", etc). The open/close button for the tray doesn't
do anything. It seems like the internal connections are crossed or
something.
Has anyone seen this type of problem? Is it worth getting repaired? Or
is it something that one could tinker with at home (when "one" has very
little experience fixing electronic equipment :))?
Thanks,
J Wermont

Crossed wires are unlikely, becasue the wires are printed on circuit
boards and on flexible cables.
However, the good news is that often the problems you're seeing
might just be due to poor (dirty or loose) connections where cards
and cables connect.
The trick is to open the case (no surprise there) and unplug and
replug everything you can. But only after you disconnect it from the
mains, of course - and please wait for any power supply capacitors
to discharge!
Note some caveats:
Some connectors have locks on them, especially cable connectors, and
the locks are not necessarily obvious.
Integrated circuits can be ruined if you unplug and replug them out
of alignment. This probably won't be a problem, because the ICs are
usually directly soldered to the boards anyway.
You always need to use care even on things that look easy to unplug
and replug, becasue they never are.
Does the remote work?
I predict that the player will never work - don't feel like a
failure if it doesn't, it's beyond human control :-)
HTH,
Gino
who loves to mess around like the above, and often enough fails...

OK, I'll give that a shot.

Not sure what you mean by "locks". But I'll try the above first, before
trying to unplug something that won't unplug.

No - and I tried it with new batteries, too.

Well, in that case, it's worth the price I paid for it...
Thanks!

YOu apparently have a PC and internet connection so you're not broke. YOu
can buy a new inexpensive model DVD player for $30-$40, so its not worth
fixing at all. |

Once upon a time, I was a well-paid computer professional. During that
time, I managed to amass a number of decent objects, including a PC, and
a savings account, which I am now living on, since I haven't worked for
2 years. I consider the internet account a necessity because that is
my main vehicle for job-hunting. I don't consider a second DVD player
a necessity, but someone I know was giving one away for free, so I took
it, to play DVDs while I work out on my treadmill (another acquisition
made during my flush years). I was hoping to either fix it myself or get
it fixed cheaply. If that's not possible, then I'll have to forego the
2nd DVD player.
Thanks anyway,

Locks are little clips or sliders that prevent a connector from
coming out. Also, some cables don't even have a connector - just the
end of the cable slides into the on-board connector. In this
case, there's a clamp of some sort that holds the cable end in place,
and you have to pull the clamp back, being sure that it's straight
before you try to pull the cable out - or put it back in.

This does indicate that the player is ill, I'd say.
