Is there a way to change the channel order (descending/ascending) on a
DirecTV/TiVo system?? I had occasion to use a Dish Network system this
weekend and noticed that feature in their setup right away.

I wonder why they chose to make the order such that when you're in guide
mode you go *down* to go up in channel # and when you're in channel mode you
go *up* to go up in channel #. It's backwards. I had occassion to use a
Dish Network system recently and quickly noticed the option to change the
channel listing order. Why can't DirecTiVo do the same thing??

Note the "Page" button label on the remote control.
Think of the "page" moving rather than a scroll of listed channels.
When the "page" moves down the bottom item on one page becomes
the top item on the next page.

An option to change this would make page operation inconsistent.

With all due respect..... What!??

Page operation is consistent now because it cannot be changed. It could
be inconsistent in the case of someone changing the option for display order.
Your wife changes the display order that you have been using and the remote
doesn't operate the same as it did.

When the guide is not being displayed and you press the Chan Up button,
the tuner goes up to the next channel. This is normal.

When the guide is displayed, Chan Up and Navigate Up both go up in the
list. Visual feedback with what is displayed on the screen is more
important than the abstract notion of large numbers = up.

The guide mode works on *visual placement* (above/below) and the channel
mode works on *numerical order*. This would be OK if the guide mode would
list the channels with the lower numbers on the bottom - but instead the
lower numbers are on the top. From the guide you *visually learn* the
relationship between the channel up/down button and the displayed order. But
in channel mode that direction is reversed. It's slightly confusing but
mostly annoying. I was surprised that Dish Networks had overcome that issue
by giving users the choice of choosing ascending or descending channel
order. Choosing appropriately allows continuity of channel button use from
guide mode to channel mode.
For example, if I'm watching Headline News (204), I know from seeing the
channels in guide mode that I push the channel *down* button (and then
select) to go to ESPN (206). But in channel mode, I must push *up* to get
to ESPN. It would be good if DirecTiVo would include a channel order user
preference feature similar to what Dish Networks has done.
