Philips DVP-642 'Closed Caption' problems (no display) |
|
|
Hello,
Most of my DVDs have the words CC (Closed Captioned) on the package. I
proceeded to the DVP-642 video menu and enabled the CLOSED CAPTION
option (w/ SUBTITLES OFF). I then playbacked the DVDs and none of them
displayed any words.
Just in case, don't get confused with the subtitles -- I'm not talking
about that but instead the built-in CC decoder in the dvd player.
Any help will be appreciated.

Have you turned on the CC display on your tv? In NA at least, your tv has
to have the CC decoder built-in. In Europe, I thnk they have teletext boxes
or some such devices...

From my understanding, most DVD players should have the CC decoder
built-in and so it is supposed to be able to display directly to any
TV (even if the TV has no built-in CC decoder). By the way, no, my TV
does not have a CC decoder.
If I am wrong, please correct me. Thanks :)

I thought I did...
In NA, tvs have to have the CC decoder in them. For a DVD player, they just
have to have the ability to PASS the CC onto the tv so it can display it.
In actuality, your description is for subtitles, and many make that mistake.
CC is a function of the tv, not dvd player, provided your disc has CC on it.

There are a couple of brands of dvd players that do not support "closed
captioning".........meaning even if your playing a dvd disk that has the
CC symbol on the box, and your TV has closed captioning capabiities, you
will not get captions.......JVC is one of them. |

Just encountered an interesting phenomenon, to me at least, perhaps it
is normal. On my setup (Magnavox MDV455, which is similar to the
Philips DVP642, including easy region hacks and Philips 30PF9946 LCD
HDTV) closed captions work fine when running in 480i. When switched
to 480p, no closed captions. The TV doesn't even respond to caption
on-off setting when running 480p. Subtitles, of course, when present,
work fine either way.
Is this a normal situation, or unique (or nearly so) to the Philips
TV? |

I'm willing to speculate...
First guess:
Closed captioning is in the extra scan lines in the vertical
interval (this is true). When the player converts the picture to
progressive, it throws away the data in those scan lines (this is my
guess).
Second guess:
Closed captioning is processed by the TV set (this too is true).
Your TV doesn't process CC when it is in progressive mode (this is
also a guess).
Third guess:
Progressive doesn't have a spec for closed captioning (pure
speculation).

Gino
