I am using Gordionknot to try to rip some of my dvds to xvids. The problem
is that when I go to start encoding using the last step I keep getting an
error that says "cannot find stats file". Exactly what is this stats file
and which program in the Gordionknot suite is responsible for generating it?

Thanks

That message is most likely coming from the codec.
The "stats file" is used in multi-pass encoding.
GK may or may not report an additional error or may just quit (I
don't use it, so can't say for sure) when the codec errors out.

I seem to recall this message mysteriously popping up from Divx
some time ago - perhaps it's version related? I'm currently
using 5.21 and have not encountered this message in many months
or longer. I don't recall why the codec got stuck in this error
(oddly in pass one??) but an upgrade may have been the solution!

BTW - a VERY simple alternative to GK, et al, is VDub-MPEG2 (or
VDub-Mod probably as well) which will convert VOBs to
AVI-Divx/Xvid. To make the use of VDub perfectly smooth, use
DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to a single VOB (options, File
mode, file splitting=none).

If there are multiple audio tracks, VDub-MPEG2 will offer you a
selection among them.

Also, at the VDub-MPEG2 source/exe page
(http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/) there is an ac3 plug-in,
in case you want/need to deal with it.
