I just bought a new Panasonic DMR-E55k DVD video recorder. It will play MP3
music files that I've burned onto CD, but it won't play AVI or MPEG files.
IS it possible for me to convert the AVI's and MPEGs to another media
format so I can play them on the Panasonic? NERO is my CD burning program.
If I can convert them, do I need another CD burning program?

Thanks...

You can encode them with an encoder such as TMPGEnc, then author them to a
DVD. Time consuming, and audio sync issues are common with DivX/Xvid

I have a TV Out setup, that I now run to the DVD Recorder (E85), so I play
the file on the PC and record on the Recorder. So easy, and such good
results.

When you write "author them to a DVD" do you mean burn them to a DVD?
Currently, I only have a cd burner. Can I burn the converted media files to
a cd and play them on the DVD recorder or do I need to burn them to DVD?

I was wondering how you like your E85? Does it have its own hard drive?
For your TV out setup, what cable are you using to connect your DVD
player/CD player to your DVD recorder? S video?

Thanks...

Hi David

Here is a primer.
A DVD Player or recorder can play DVD-Video format DVD's. This is a format
that has a certain file structure, and where the movie is in mpg2 format,
encoded to that using DVD complinat rules, such as resolution, frame rate,
etc.

A DVD Player cannot play avi's or mpgs as files (apart form a few players
that support DivX and XVid)

You can play VCD or SVCD in most players /recorders (My E85 does not support
SVCD) , that is like a DVD-Video except its at lower res and bitrate than
DVD, but is on a CD.

You can encode the avi's to SVCD format using say TMPGEnc, that wiull give
you a SVCD compliant mpg file, you can then use an authoring program such as
TMPG DVD Author, that will create a SVCD compliant fils structure amnd files
on your PC, you can then write that with Nero, or use Nero to create an SVCD
using the mpg you encoded

BUTTTTTTTTTT

DVD Burners for the PC are cheap now, DVD blanks are cheap, so why not go
that way only?

It's magic!
It has an 80Gb HDD. My cable setup is reasonably optimal, and I have a Sky
decoder so I get all my channels as well as Sky via satellite as a digital
feed. (I';m in New Zealand)
The E85 is a fancy VCR, superb quality, identical recordings to anything on
the TV or Sky Digital. The 80Gb disk gives me 18 hours at best quality, 26
hours at normal play, and 72 hours at LP (not ideal except for average
quality programs), and either 102 or 142 hours at EP, which is only suitable
for kids cartoons, but iots great for that.

Makes superb DVDs.

Cable Setup:

PC goes to and from the DVD recorder with AV cables
DVD Recorder goes to TV with SCART
Sky Decoder goes to TV with SCART, and to DVD Recorder with SCART
VCR goes to/from DVD Receoirder with AV cables

I have a Panny S35 player, but that is an extra, I just have that connected
to the TV, no need to play a DVD to the recorder to copy it. If its a
commercial copy that wont work, much easier to use DVDShrink on the PC to
copy a copyright DVD, plus that makes it region free too

One feature that I have with mys etup is very useful. I DL lotsa movies. To
encode those avi;s takes many hours, and often the audio loses sync due to
conversion of the frame rate and audio frequency, this is quite common, but
whjat I do if I wnat a "keeper" onto DVD, is to play it on the PC via TV Out
to the recorder. Brilliant

Yes, I've thought about buying a DVD burner. The prices have gone down.
If I'm reading your answer correctly, it looks like there are 3 steps
involved in playing media files such as AVIs and MPGs on a DVD recorder.
There's the encoding, the file structure creation, and the actual burning.
Would this procedure be the same if I were to buy a DVD burner? If not, how
would it differ?

Your E85 sounds awesome. I wanted to but a recorder with a hard drive, but
they were a little more than I was willing to spend at the time. My guess
is that they'll all have hard drives at some point. I'm enjoying my Panny
e55. I record on the 9.4 GB double sided RAM disks. They currently only
sell the 4.7 GB disks in the stores around here, so I had to purchase the
9.4 GB disks online. I get about 4 hours of recording time on each side
using the LP setting. I'm very pleased with the recording quality. It
seems much, much better compared to my old VCR . Any suggestions on how
to clean the DVD RAM discs?. I've read that it's not a good idea to use
cloth on A DVD disk like you can on a CD. I know I can buy a cleaner at the
computer store, but I'd hate to give the store my money if I can just as
easily use something at home.

Thanks for all of your help Tony! I really do appreciate it..

Dave
