One of the best CD players was the Harris CD2001 or Audiometrics CD10
broadcast cart player, which used a caddy like the old CD-ROM drives.
These were narrow enough that three would fit on a 19" shelf and were
hell for stout. Denon makes similarly sized units in both trayload and
caddy configurations.

Have you considered pulled car OEM units, if you don't need or are
willing to modify for line inputs? Car audio places will give you auto
CD player/radios or sell them for a few dollars. Fab a cheap 12VDC
supply from salvaged Schumacher batt chargers or shield a PC AT supply
with a little creativity and build a power filter, you are listening for
very very little money.

I've been there recently, and they didn't have the CR-L600. Their
web site lists the Legacy AG-L800, but that's not what I'm looking
for. (It *is* compact though). I think the CR-L600 may be new,
which is why nobody seems to have it yet (including the Teac web
site), so maybe J&R will have it in the future. But that doesn't
help me now.

Also apparently new is the Teac Reference 100 series:

And damnit, wouldn't you know, they come with speakers! :-(

Every time someone makes a blanket statement, they are most
likely wrong. Check out the following links for Teac's
reference series of mini-sized mid and high end components:

http://www.teac.com/ref/ref.html

http://www.teac.com/consumer_electronics/ReferenceSeries.html

You will be pleased with the size and look if you are looking
for something smaller than the full EIA standard size equipment.

The Teac Reference series would be exactly what I want, if only it
included a combination Stereo receiver/CD player.

Someone else suggested the Teac Legacy CR-L600, which *does* look
like what I want. But I can't figure out how to buy it in the US,
and I can't even find it on any of Teac's web sites. Actually it's
not clear that I can buy the Reference series in the US either.

At the moment I am still leaning towards getting the Onkyo CS-210
or the Denon D-M31S (pricy!) and getting rid of the speakers (ugh!).

I just thought I would follow up, for anyone who was interested.
I ended up getting the Onkyo CS-210 and putting aside the speakers.
Who knows, maybe I will want them later. The Onkyo CR-305TX (the
receiver component of the CS-210) just seemed more serious than
the other mini-system CD receivers I looked at. Unlike the others
it seems the Onkyo components were originally intended to be sold
separately; in fact Onkyo has a whole range of mini and micro
components which are sold separately in Europe but not in the US
(take a look at the 205 and 155 separate collections at
http://www.onkyo.net/uk/product/index.php). Also unlike some of
the other mini-systems I looked at, CR-305TX has a full complement
of input/output ports, so I had no trouble hooking it up with a
turntable.

I looked at the Denon D-M31S, but I found it annoying to operate.
In particular you couldn't fast forward or back through a track by
keeping the next or previous track button depressed, and that's
something I sometimes need to do. The JVC EX-A1 was very nice,
but just not worth the extra money. Most of the others I looked
at just seemed like toys.

Funny story: I visited a very high end Manhattan audio store,
because they had a number of Teac Reference series components listed
for sale on their web site, and I wanted to take a look. When I
asked about them the salesman -- who seemed like a rather senior
guy -- told me that the store hadn't had them for a year and a
half, and that anyway Teac had discontinued the whole line. I was
kind of annoyed, and pointed out that their web site was a little
out of date. The salesman looked at me, shrugged, and said "we
don't care". I pursued the issue a little, and came away with the
distinct impression that from the salesman's point of view the web
site was full of garbage, had little or nothing to do with the
business of the store, and he wasn't even going to bother to pretend
otherwise!

Should have told him about the law in Australia where you can
get sued or fined for having false or outdated information on
your business website.

A restaurant got fined for having an old menu on their website
with lower prices than they were currently charging.
