Their new PMP-400 (?) has a touch screen also but now you're looking at
$800 or more and will work with Linux (wonder if this circumvents DRM
issues?).

Circumventing DRM doesn't require Linux (although that's a simple way to do
it). Just get a "stream recorder" software package, and re-record the media
while it's playing.

Interestingly, the Iriver software deals with the DRM issues by allowing

you to copy formats into your player, but not out. When exporting voice
recordings, the native format is IRM, iriver rights management, which is
then converted to MP3 when you decide to export the voice file. In other
words, an MP3, going in or out can only be transferred once. All the
other file formats, OGG and WMA, can only be trasnferred in and that's
it. I could probably transfer IRM anyway I'd like, but who's gonna read it?

This would explain why Iriver simply does not make their flash player a
USB drive from which you could drag your files to or from.

Actually, they do have a firmware (their iFP-7xx/8xx) that allows it to be
seen as a hard drive and operate without their iRiver Media Manager. I
believe the version is 1.27 where the 1.25 version is the normal one that
requires their iRiver Media Manager software (or whatever it's called).
That MP3 tag is the stickler as mentioned. You can go in, just not out. I
tried changing the tag but it isn't allowed so it's stuck once in the player
(which is damn stupid, imho). Only drawback is you lose some recording
ability (compression limited on external recording).

I'd double check it, but right now it has "issues." (ergo, the iRiver
white-noise problem).

Thanks for the info. My iriver has firmware version 1.24 and I can see

1.25 on the iriveramerica site. So where's 1.27?

If you post on the board someone may send it to you. I didn't want to try
it as the recording rate dropped and it was still in alpha mode back then).

Nice!. Bookmarked:) 1.27 seems to still be in beta. I'll wait till it

is fully "christened" by iRiver.
