I received a filed with the name Xvid POT with an .avi extension. I
tried to play with with WMP 9.0 - it just gave me sound with no
images.

It tried to download a codec - but that failed.

So I tried Vegas Video 3.0 - it just loaded sound.

Looked for Xvid POT on Google - nothing came up.

Anyond know anything about this format or how to make it visible?

Try this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

If that doesn't work, check the file-format with a program called
GSpot or Avicodec.

Just look for XVID codec, not POT.
