DVD/DivX/MP3 players can read ripped DivX or MP3 files on a CD.

If I rip several DivX (or MP3) files on a DVD (not a CD), can these players
read them also?

I project to buy the Philips DVP-720A and would like to be sure it reads
DivX and MP3 on DVD. If it can't do others do it ?
(my questions are not about player softwares for PC).

Thanks

My Philips DVP642 does. I regularly record DivX movies that won't fit
on a single CD to DVD and can play them with no problems. Depending
on file sizes, 3 to 5 movies fit on a DVD nicely.

Ditto...

Get the Philips DVP 642 player. They seem to almost always remain at the
same price of 69$ at either Circuit City/Best Buy/ and even walmart had
them. It will play all the supported Divx codecs and it also has no problem
with any Xvids or Mpeg/Mpg files ive thrown at it. I can compress several
DVD movies to Divx/Xvid like the other poster mentioned onto a standard
DVD-r (or +) and they perform awesome. Or, you can still use a CD-r for
copying a single movie if thats all you have to put it on. Still the same
perfect performance. Its almost bulletproof. It does also do progressive
scan and has both optical and coaxial digital outuputs.

Lite-on has their version of the same killer dvd player, but It was selling
for a little more and not available at any store (retail) I saw. But their
owners swear by it as well.

There may be exceptions but in general Philips are useless for playing
non-standard VCD's (or even standard VCD's if these are multi-session).
Formats we've had trouble with include S-VHS (which Philips invented!),
XVCD, XSVCD, KVCD and CVD. In addition they are extremely intolerant of
recording errors and still-frame menus.

D'oh! A friend has the top-of-the-range DVD963-SA. Sometimes it does play
S-VCD and sometimes it doesn't so my advice is not to use Philips if this is
a major consideration. You may have problems replaying the latest XviD
codecs regardless of make of player. Wherever possible I download a true
DivX 5.1.1 file.

Okay, I'm interested. I've always heard that JVC invented the s-vhs format.
Please educate me. Thanx - Nex
