Hi...

I have a couple of two-sided DVD-RAM disks in cartridges which I use in a
Panasonic DMR-E50 recorder.

Since I have an ample supply of single DVD-RAM disks, I decided to try using
the double-sided ones to backup files on my computer with my DVD-RAM drive.
But the drive is so slow I found it was impractical for this purpose. I
erased the disks on the computer.

However, when I tried to use one of the disks in in the DMR-E50, it got
stuck on
"Recover". I tried everything I could think of, including suggestions from
newsgroups, to try to get the machine to eject the cartridge.

I finally had to disassemble the unit to remove the cartridge.

My question: is there a sure way to re-format that disk on the computer so
the DMR-E50 will accept it? I surely don't want to disassemble it again!

Thanks.

Ken

Panasonic brand discs are hopeless for data backing up.
Panasonic discs are designed for video only. They used to make a data
disc but no more.

Buy another brand that is designed for data or is already formatted to
do both.

Sounds like a good solution, but could you explain what "format as udf v2 "
means? How would I go about that?

Thanks.

Yes, exactly. I do the same almost daily with Panasonic discs, the old 2X
kind. Never a problem over hundreds of writes in Fat32 on my systems, and
hundreds of discs filled (and formatted and used again) with VR mode TV shows
from both a Panny and JVC DVD standalone. It all works great.

I particularly like the fact that I don't need to finalize the -Rams after
filling with TV shows to watch at another location. Eject-disc-and-run, gone.
-RW's (which my JVC also writes to in both modes, -Rams only do VR as far as I
can tell) need formatting. Also, in my experience with Memorex -RWs, errors
can crop up more easily than on the -Rams I use. YMMV. Nex

Why do you say that?

I have no problems using dvd-ram discs for data back-up. In fact, with a
Panasonic hard drive recorder, my dvd-ram discs are now only used in my pc.

there should have been some software supplied with your dvd-ram
writer.
this allows the formatting of a dvd-ram disc as
1. udf 1.5
2. udf 2.0
3. fat 32

if you don't have the dvd-ram formatting software , it is easily
findable on the net.

there is one version on panasonics site , another on lg's site.

xp222one.exe @ 1598kb , panasonics site
lgramxp.zip @ 1799kb , lg site

if you can't find them , i can email you the file.

I bought this drive second hand, no software. But I'll check out those
links.

Thanks.
