Objective: burn reliably at 8x on 8x certified DVD-R media from good brands
such as Taiyo Yuden, Maxell or Verbatim.

Should also read DVD-R fast as I use Nero's verify function.

Note that only DVD-R media will be used (I've read tests that stated the
Pioneer is tuned better for DVD+R)

So which is best/more reliable?

You can't go wrong with either the Pioneer or the NEC. Make sure you
load the latest firmware once u get it.

I went for the NEC 3500, as it is faster and has more (unofficial firmware
updates). My LG 4120 is pretty good also, and includes dvd-ram writing which
none the 3 others can do).
