I have recently learned that there are set top DVD recorders with hard
drives that allow one to record TV programs to the hard drive, edit out
the commercials and then burn them to DVD. (By "set top" I mean that
they connect to your TV, not your computer.) Is there a web site that
compares the different models?

Are there any that play Divx or Xvid files on DVD or CD? Are there any
that record to DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-RAM?

When using one of these units, how easy is it to edit out the
commercials? About how long would it take to edit out the commercials
from a one-hour program?

Is it better to edit out the commercials when you watch the program or
is the process of editing out the commercials so distracting that it is
hard to enjoy the program? Thank you in advance for all replies.

The recorder works just like your VCR except it is writing to the Hard
Drive or DVD media. I would suggest editing from the Hard Drive. This
way, you can make changes if you do not like the results.

Also, I would not buy any recorder that does not except dither +RW or
-RW media. Would you buy a VCR that only let you use a blank tape one
time?

I have a Panasonic DVD Recorder which has similar editing to the
Panasonic models with hard drives. I usually remove the commercials by
first setting chapter breaks and then deleting the unwanted/commercial
chapters. I can generally edit the commercials out of an hour long
program in under 5 minutes. Exactly how long it takes depends on how
good a job I want to do and whether I want to get it to the exact
frame.

There is also an editor for cutting out unwanted parts, but it is
slower and somewhat awkward to use. You have to remove the sections
one at a time.

I find RW media really isn't needed, if you have a Hard Drive. If you want
to record a show that you don't want to save, just record it to the Hard
Drive. In fact, I record everything to the Hard Drive first. Anything I
decide to save then goes from the Hard Drive to a DVD-R.

No digital tuner ? no thanks ? a single analogue tuner ? no thanks, I don't
want to encourage the bastards :)

If I was buying in Aus now, I would get either a:

http://www.topfield-australia.com.au/product.asp?SKU=TF5000PVRT

or probably a

http://d1.com.au/hmc/hmc_highlights.html

it has an EPG.

there is no time frame when dvd recorders are going to have a digital tuner,
i'm not gonna wait 5 years to get a big hard drive recorder when they are
available now. i think too much is being made of this digital tuner
business. i bet the digital tuner will be SD anyway.

That URL doesn't work for me. For others who had problems:
www.videohelp.com
select "DVD writers"
click the "HD" box
select "only desktop DVD recorders"
click search
The only problem is that it also shows old models that are
no longer currently sold by their manufacturers.

After checking various manufacturers' websites, here is
a list of some of the _current_ models. If anyone knows
of others (current/new models with HD only), please post.

Mfg: JVC
Model: DR-MH30S
MSRP: $900
Writes: DVD-R, -RW, -RAM
HD: 160 GB

Mfg: Panasonic
Model: DMR-E85HS
MSRP: $600
Writes: DVD-R, -RAM
HD: 120 GB

Mfg: Panasonic
Model: DMR-E95HS
MSRP: $800
Writes: DVD-R, -RAM
HD: 160 GB

Mfg: Panasonic
Model: E100HS
MSRP: $1,2000
Writes: DVD-R, -RAM
HD: 120 GB

Mfg: Pioneer
Model: DVR-520H-S
MSRP: $800
Writes: DVD-R, -RW
HD: 80 GB

Mfg: Sharp
Model: DV-HR300I
MSRP: $470?
Writes: DVD-R, -RW
HD: 80 GB

Mfg: Sony
Model: RDR-HX900
MSRP: $800
Writes: DVD-R, -RW, +R, +RW
HD: 80 GB

Mfg: Toshiba
Model: RD-XS32
MSRP: $600
Writes: DVD-R, -RW, -RAM
HD: 80 GB

Mfg: Toshiba
Model: RD-XS52
MSRP: $700
Writes: DVD-R, -RW, -RAM
HD: 160 GB

Does anyone own one of these and have first hand experience?
Many of the mfgs offer a firewire connector. We would be
interested in attaching a DV camcorder and going directly to DVD

Any thoughts as to the usefulness/non-usefulness of the DVD formats
that the various mfgs offer? The mfgs that offer -RAM point out that
it can be reused ~1,000 times versus ~100 times for -RW. I think that
I may have seen a note on one of the websites that said that a DVD-RAM
that has been formatted on a PC has to be reformatted on the set top
machine before use.

Agreed but as long as people like you continue to buy them with single
analogue tuners why would they bother updating to a digital tuner, let
alone with a HDD that size, twin tuners should be a must. I refuse to
reward poor or compromised design with a purchase.

Indeed. That's why I would get a D1 or a Toppy.

Mostly SD, I still await a HDD based DTV twin tuner recorder before I
upgrade my TV to something close to HD capable. That aside, I can't even
magine why would you persist with analogue (assuming you are in a region
with DTV transmission) ?

IMO for anything released these days with the much HDD (means you must
watch a shit load of TV), twin tuners are a must, digital tuners are a
must. Anything else means we are getting second rate gear.

and certinaly a HDD recorder (ie the D1) with an EPG shits all over one
without, let alone the other advanced abilities.
